Marion Mahone Couey

1930 - 2022

Marion Mahone Couey was born on April 13, 1930 in Brewton, Alabama to Ruth Mahone and Henry Pelham Coale, Sr. She spent the entirety of her childhood in southern Alabama learning kindness, warmth, charity and how to cook - - the essence of "Southern Hospitality". She enjoyed telling loved ones that she learned to cook as a young girl standing on a step stool taking instructions from her ailing grandmother.

In 1947, Marion began driving a friend to the local radio station for a weekly piano performance. There she met her future husband, Freddie E. Couey. They married on June 12, 1948 and made a good life raising five children together. They celebrated 66 years of marriage before his death in 2015. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was known for her cooking, her generosity, her loving heart and most of all her immeasurable devotion to family.

At the age of 86, Marion took up hand-made pottery. She made countless bowls for family and friends. Her signature pieces contain imprints of her fingertips leaving behind particularly meaningful keepsakes for loved ones. Becoming "Potter Marion" brought her much joy in her latter years, but didn't come close to the joy she had in being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She truly gave her all to her family.

Marion lived her life according to 1 John 3:18. She exemplified that real love is an action. She made sure all of those lucky enough to be around her felt the evidence of her love by how she cared for them-sometimes with a full plate of food and often with a quiet act of charity that left the recipient of her gift feeling as if they'd somehow helped her!

Marion passed away in her home in Conroe, Texas on Saturday, January 29, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her four daughters, Linda White (Rick), Ellen Campbell (John Ross Campbell - deceased), Carole Ricketts (Bobby), Beth Reneau (Kyle), and her son, Douglas E Couey (Tami); her grandchildren loved her as "Mimi": Christy DeVries, Tracy Guzman (Mike), Justin Boyd (Carrie), Alyssa Ricketts Abjornson (Timothy), William Ricketts (Alison), Melissa Reneau, Wes Reneau (Ashlea), Brandon Reneau, Matthew Couey (Sarah), and Blake Couey and her seventeen great grandchildren, Tyler, Avery and Dillon DeVries, Austin and Zachary Guzman, Jolie and Coby Boyd, Logan, Landon and Luke Abjornson, Robbie and Eliza Ricketts, Nathan and Joseph Harrison, Owen Reneau, and Xander and Kaylan Couey. Marion is also survived by her best friend, Sue Reneau, whom she often referred to her as her "sister".

The family would like to thank Dr. Michelle Bullard, Dr. Paul Cunningham, and Dr. John Williamson for providing Marion with excellent care over the years. A special thanks goes to Dana, Amanda, Jade, Angela, Arobeth, and Domonique from Home Instead for the care, comfort and friendship they provided to Marion. The family would also like to thank Marie Noblett from Alamo Hospice for her guidance and calming support during this time.
