Irene Zook

GREENWOOD - Irene Zook of Greenwood, left her broken earthly body on February 13, 2016, in the same way she lived in it – in peace, in courageous strength and surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Dover, on October 30, 1940 to Adam A. and Anna (Detweiler) Miller. Irene moved to Stuarts Draft, Va. where she lived with her family until March 29, 1962 when she married Cristian A. Zook. Crist and Irene moved to Greenwood, where they raised their three children and served faithfully at the Greenwood Mennonite Church. Irene's new freedom is celebrated by her husband, Crist, who modeled faithfulness and selflessness as he cared for his wife; children, Brenda (Mukanda) Mbualungu, Brian (Rebekah) Zook, Anna (Travis) Carter; grandchildren, Mukanda "Junior" Mbualungu, Olivia Mbualungu, Charro Ngongo, Aiden Zook, Caleb Zook, Ransom Zook, Sadie Carter. Also rejoicing and remembering are Irene's three sisters, six brothers, one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law and their families: Malinda (Melvin) Bontrager, John (Denise) Miller, William (Silvia) Miller, Rudy (Gloria) Miller, Neil (Annie) Miller, Roman (Kay) Miller, Joe (Ruth) Miller, Lydia (Harley) Yoder, Martha (Floyd) Bender, Ivan Swarey, Betty Miller. Irene joined her siblings, Lena Swarey and David Miller; and her parents, who awaited her in heaven. She enjoyed many things including time spent with her family, the beauty of creation in birds and flowers, intricate details of her cross stitch and crocheting projects. Her character of gentleness, patience, faithfulness, and encouragement served as a strong testimony to the many that loved and cared for her through forty years of illness. Irene dearly loved and wholly depended on her Savior, Jesus, through many difficult times. Her family would like to extend sincere gratitude to all the friends, medical staff and caregivers who contributed to her care these many years. Visiting hours will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at the Greenwood Mennonite Church. A private burial will be held prior to the memorial service at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, also at the Greenwood Mennonite Church. In lieu of flowers, Irene's family encourages you to find an individual who needs compassion, help or encouragement and do an act of kindness in her honor.
