CLAYTON, DE - Joseph Mahlon Ziegler passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Bayhealth Medical Center, Kent Campus in Dover, Delaware.
Born in Wilmington, Joe was the son of Joseph Harbold Ziegler and Frances Naomi Ziegler. He was a 1965 graduate of Smyrna High School and attended Delaware State University. He served in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne in the Vietnam War, 1967-1968. Joe was a hard-working man who was loved by everyone that knew him. He spent a majority of his career working heavy highway construction. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on classic cars.
In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his nephew, John E. Shetzler, IV (JES).
Joe will be dearly missed by his family; his children, Joseph T. Ziegler (Jul) and Alison M. Ziegler; his grandchildren, Joseph F. and Mahlon J. Ziegler, Nevaeh A. Johnson, Elijah D. Reece and Delilah N. Reece. In addition, his is survived by his siblings, Eunice Z. Craig (Jerry), Susan Z. Shetzler (John) and Janet Z. Brown (Tom). He is also survived by his nephews, M. Gregory Reed (Melissa) and R. Jerry Craig, Jr. (Ann); and nieces, Jennifer C. Purcell (Gregory) and Emily F. Shetzler.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 3 to 7 PM in the American Legion Post 14, located at 107 W. Glenwood Avenue in Smyrna, with military honors conducted by the Smyrna-Clayton VFW Post 8801 at 4 PM. For the services please consider wearing casual attire as Joe would have liked that.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in memory of Joseph Mahlon Ziegler be sent to the American Legion Post 14, 107 W. Glenwood Ave., Smyrna, DE 19977.

I met Joey Ziegler in the third grade. He sat in front of me. He turned around one day, said do you want be friends and after that we had many many great memories and great adventures. Thank you Joe for being my friend.
