Leonard Smulowitz Obituary

Leonard Smulowitz, 95

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. - Leonard Smulowitz, 95, formerly of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 6, 2008.

He was born in Coatesville, Pa. on July 20, 1912, and was the son of the late David and Sasha Smullowitz.

Mr. Smulowitz attended schools in Pennsylvania and earned a degree in accounting from Wharton College. On March 18, 1945 he was married to the former Muriel Galen. She passed away on June 25, 1992.

He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and served in Germany and England. Mr. and Mrs. Smulowitz moved to Cambridge in 1945 and he worked for Feldman Furniture in Cambridge and later operated the Leonard Co., which was the family furniture business for a number of years.

Mr. Smulowitz was active in the Democratic Party, AARP and was a one of the founders of the Pleasant Day Adult Day Care Center in Cambridge.

He enjoyed reading and loved to follow baseball. Mr. Smullowitz moved to California to be near his daughter about three years ago. He had been in failing health for the past six months when he passed away at his home on Thursday evening.

Survivors include three daughters, Dell Smulowitz and her husband, Marshall Howard of Woodland Hills, Calif., Janis M. Stadnicki and her husband, Steve Stadnicki of San Anselmo, Calif. and Susan Smulowitz of Salisbury; one grandson, Brandon Howard of Woodland Hills, Calif., and one stepbrother, Alan Peyser of Philadelphia, Pa.

A graveside service was held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Beth Israel Cemetery in Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Holly Center, P.O. Box 2358, Salisbury, MD 21802 or to the Pleasant Day Adult Day Care Center, 2474 Cambridge Beltway, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
