Louise Steward Mahan
Louise Steward Mahan passed away peacefully on December 16, 2021 at Westminster Towers in Winter Park, Florida. She was born September 23, 1928, near Matthewstown, Maryland, the fourth daughter of John and Elsie Steward. Louise was a long-time resident of Salisbury, Md. until retiring to Florida in 2014.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Grant Mahan; as well as three sisters, Esther Clark, Dorothy Miller, and Marjorie Walbridge; and three brothers, Ralph, Earl, and Billy Steward.
Louise is survived by her four sons, Larry Grant Mahan (Lois Mahan), Dr. Steward Keith Mahan (Penny Mahan), Kenneth Lynn Mahan (Donna Mahan), and Dr. Thomas Kepner Mahan (Rebecca Mahan). Louise has seven grandchildren that were the light of her life: Henry Mahan, Molly Mahan Palmer, Heather Mahan Cintron, Joshua Mahan, Amanda Mahan, Lauren Mahan, and J.T. Mahan; she also has four great grandchildren for which she was so grateful: Hoxie Mahan, Sofia Cintron, Julian Cintron, and Dominic Cintron.
A memorial service will be held in her hometown of Salisbury Md., on February 12, 2022, at the Community of Joy Church starting at 10:30 a.m. Those who knew Louise are invited to attend the service (masks requested). The memorial service will be streamed on Facebook Live at @communityofjoychurch for those who wish to attend virtually. Louise will be laid to rest next to Grant at the Spring Hill Memory Gardens.
Louise will be remembered as a dedicated educator in Salisbury. After earning her BSc.in Business Education from UMES in 1967, Louise taught business courses at James M. Bennet, Sr. high school before joining the faculty at Wor-Wic Community College. Louise retired from Wor-Wic Community College as Professor Emerita in 1987.
Louise Steward Mahan was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren on the Eastern Shore. She and her late husband, Grant, were founding members of the Community of Joy Church of the Brethren in Salisbury and were active supporters of Camp Mardela in Denton, Md.
Louise lived her life to the fullest and enjoyed table games, playing the piano, travel, fishing, and spending time with her large extended family. She was well known for her cooking and baking, which she shared generously with friends, family and strangers alike through Habitat for Humanity and the outreach activities of her church. Louise always had a positive outlook and words of encouragement for everyone in her life. She was truly a great inspiration to her family and all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Community of Joy Church, 31094 Carioca Rd., Delmar, MD 21875.
