Thomas Merritt Obituary
Born on May 9, 1938, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Tom was the son of the late Lawrence and Helen (Dunn) Merritt. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1955 as a First Lieutenant in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Tom proudly served in the United States Army's 3rd Armored Division "Spearhead" as an expert rifleman, stationed in Kirch-Gons, Germany, from June 27, 1955, to June 13, 1958.
Upon returning home, Tom married Joana, the love of his life. They raised their daughter, Susan, in Speedway, Indiana, where Tom worked as a Millwright at General Motors Detroit Diesel Allison. During his time in Speedway, Tom became an avid racing fan, frequently attending the "Indy 500" and NASCAR races.
After retirement, Tom and Joana moved to Nashville, Indiana, where Tom served as a conductor and tour guide for the popular "Nashville Express" tourist train. He enjoyed sharing his extensive knowledge of the historic town and its artist colony. In 2013, Tom and Joana relocated to Annapolis, Maryland, to be closer to their daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In his spare time, Tom found joy in golfing and fishing.
Tom was preceded in death by his brother Lawrence Merritt and sister, Shirley Sue Merritt Whitis. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Joana; his sister Patricia Hunt (Robert) of Indiana; his daughter Susan Pequigney of Maryland; his grandson Conor Pequigney (Alexis); his granddaughter Madeline Riley (Patrick); and his two great-grandsons, Ian and Hayden.
A private service and burial with military honors will be held at Maryland VA Cemetery in Crownsville.
