STEVEN CHRISTOPHER MILLER
Steven Christopher Miller, 67 years old, passed away on July 30, 2024, in Neptune Beach, Florida after a hard fight to overcome his recent medical events.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 18, 1957, and started his adventures from there. His family moved to Florida, spent a year in the Bahamas, eventually moving from Florida to southern California and graduating from Homestead High School (Cupertino, CA) in 1975. He went to the junior college there for one term before enlisting in the United States Coast Guard. He spent 22 years serving around the world as a Quarter Master, including working with the Navy and several other military units around the world. He spent time in the Artic with various scientific groups on a Coast Guard Icebreaker as well as his final years doing search & rescue and guarding our shorelines in a law enforcement capacity. After retiring from the Coast Guard, he started and ran a backflow business until a year ago, when his health started to decline.
After retiring from the military in Neptune Beach, Florida he started the next phase of his adventures. Through the VA Education Program, he received a BA in Business UNF. He was an avid photographer and a founding member of the Beaches Photography Club. He supported MS research with fund raisers in Florida, was a strong supporter of veterans' causes and donated to other causes close to his heart. His latest hobby was learning woodworking, but he continued to travel in the US to various events like the solar eclipse, historic events and photography outings. Before his father passed, they were competitors with firearms and attended competitions in the southeastern US. With his father, they also were SCUBA instructors for a time. His interests and skills were wide and varied throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by parents, Donald Warren Miller (2005) and Mary Alice (nee Riegel) Miller (2022). He is survived by his sisters Monica Marie Martin (Hugh McBryde) of Montana and Michelle Denise Terry of California, his nephew Nicholas Martin (Jackie Martin) of Pennsylvania, his niece Christy Mocko (Paul Mocko) of Montana and nephew Scott Terry of Hawaii as well as grand-nieces and nephews. He will be missed not only by his family, but also by the many friends in his community and around the country.
A Celebration of Life-Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. at Beaches Chapel by Hardage-Giddens, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, 32250.
