George Baker Obituary

George F. Baker Jr.

December 16, 1942 - January 28, 2025

George F. Baker Jr. passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, at the age of 82.

George was born in New Lisbon, Wis., on December 16, 1942, to George F. Sr. and Ruth Baker of New Lisbon. George attended and graduated from New Lisbon High School in 1960.

On May 26, 1961, he joined the US Army National Guard out of the Mauston Armory and did his boot camp at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. On August 10,1962, he then shipped to Fort Lewis, Washington for his basic training. He received the sharp shooter with rifle and expert in M1 Carbine awards.

George lived his early years in New Lisbon and Baraboo area, working at different jobs, then moved to Huntsville, Texas, where he was a correction officer at the Estelle Unit. George retired June 2003 and then he and Sharon built their home in Dutch Hollow Lake area.

George enjoyed working out on his yard and took pride in his accomplishments, having a garden and some flower beds and did so until his health started to fail. He spent a lot of time with his little Yorkie, Molly, and fussing about the deer eating his plants and shrubbery. He was a dedicated Wisconsin sports fan (mostly while they are winning of course) and very much-loved dancing, a good Manhattan at happy hour, and listening to his all-time favorite, Elvis Presley.

George is survived by his partner, Sharon Robinson King; Sue Baker (former wife) of Mauston and their two daughters, Cindy Bak (Eric Randall) and Jennifer Baker, both of Baraboo; his son, Jeffrey Sampson (Michele) of Appleton.

George "Bumpa" also leaves behind his grandchildren, Chelsea (Will) Moore of Greer, S.C., Cody (Jamie) Hinze of Oak Creek, Wis., Kailyn Bak (Travis Mitchell) of N.C., Abigail Riechman of Clearwater, Fla., Lindsy Sampson (Clifford Herrmann) of Madison, Wis., and seven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Leah Ennis.

A Celebration of Life will follow at a later date.
