Russell G. Mittan, age 80 years, of Wymore died Thursday morning, Sept. 10, 2009, at the Wymore Good Samaritan Center.
He was born March 29, 1929, at Virginia, Neb., and was a 1947 graduate of the Virginia High School. He was employed by Swift and Company for one year. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1, 1951, to March 3, 1953. He was employed by Store Kraft Manufacturing Co. in Beatrice, both before and after his military service, for 45 years. He married Norma J. Harper on Sept. 18, 1955, at Wymore.
Russell was a member of the former Virginia Christian Church, was a 48-year member of Anderson Post 25 of the American Legion at Wymore, and was a 32-year member of the Wymore Volunteer Fire Dept. from Aug. 12, 1963, to April 1, 1995, and was currently an honorary member. His hobbies included hunting and fishing with his sons, gardening, spending time with his cats, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Russell is survived by his wife, Norma; by two sons, Kevin Mittan and his wife Kathy, and Neal Mittan and his special friend Karla Bartels, all of Wymore; by three grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Mittan, and Dana Fellows; by three sisters-in-law, Beverly Habrich and her husband Alvin of Boone, Iowa, Judy Wylie and her husband Bill of Lake Placid, N.Y., Linda Colgrove of Auburn; and by nieces and nephews. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and May Belle (Ayres) Mittan; by an infant son, Michael Mittan, on Sept. 11, 1957; by a brother, Kenny Mittan; and by two sisters, Neva Scheve and Ardene Mach.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Wymore Church of Christ, Hwy 77 and M Street, Clayton Lundstedt officiating. Military service will be conducted at the Liberty Cemetery by Anderson Post 25. Visitation will be at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, 505 N. Ninth St., Wymore, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., and at the church one hour preceding the service. Memorials to the Wymore Volunteer Fire Dept. with the funeral home in charge. Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Wymore, is in charge of arrangements.
