Kathryn Thames Obituary

Kathryn Griffin Thames, 101, of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Beaumont, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at Englewood Meridian Health Care in Englewood, Colorado. A native of Silsbee, Texas, she was born September 23, 1907, to Estella and Richard Griffin. She graduated from Texas Women's University in 1928 and in 1930 married her husband, William Rouse Thames. Kathryn was a longtime Beaumont resident, where she and her husband owned Bill Thames Pharmacy. She was an active member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and a member of the Coordinating Council. Kathryn was a third grade teacher at Longfellow School for six years. Her volunteer experiences included Baptist Hospital, Blue Birds and Campfire Girls, among many others. She loved Beaumont and the beach, enjoyed designing doll clothes, knitting, bridge, fishing and Tai Chi. A consumate football fan, she was known to bet on her favorite teams. Survivors include her daughter, Alice Gay Thames of Denver, Colorado; nephew, Murray Thames of Santa Rosa, California; and a large collection of beloved friends and admirers spanning generations. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2009, at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church under the direction of Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Some Other Place, 1240 McFaddin, Beaumont, Texas 77701 or to a charity of your choice.
