Father Andrew Morrison, S.J., 84, born June 5, 1919, in Georgetown, British Guiana, South America, died Jan. 26, 2004, at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, Georgetown, Guyana, after a brief illness.
Father Morrison joined the Society of Jesus at the Manresa Novitiate in London in 1949 and was ordained a priest in July of 1957 in Heathrope, England. Upon returning to Guyana (British Guiana) in 1959, Father Morrison was appointed Diocesan Treasurer, Vicar General and Coordinator of Youth Work. From 1976 to 1995, Father Morrison was the editor of the Catholic Standard newspaper, the only paper in Guyana to be microfiched by the United States Library of Congress for its historical value. Father Morrison's tireless pursuit of the truth and the freedom to publish those truths nearly cost him his life on several occasions. He earned national and international recognition for the Catholic Standard and his writings. The awards were granted by the following: Inter-American Press Association; Jamaican Press Association; Columbia University, Graduate School of Journalism, New York; Marie Moors Cabot Citation; The Catholic News, Trinidad and Tobago; International Catholic Union of the press, Brazil: The Titus Brandsma Award for Struggle for Press Freedom; and The Golden Arrow of Achievement, Guyana. In 1995, Father Morrison was granted a sabbatical and was in residence at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo.
In 1998, Father Morrison published his first book, Justice: The Struggle for Democracy in Guyana 1952 to 1992. From 1997 until the time of his death, Father Morrison was the pastor of St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Linden, Guyana.
Father Morrison was preceded in death by his parents, James and Johanna M., nee Van Veen, Morrison; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Harold Kiepe; and a brother-in-law, Leonard R. Fuchs Sr.
He is survived by three brothers, David (Barbara) Morrison of Truro, Nova Scotia, and John Morrison and James Morrison of Montreal Canada; and a sister, Elizabeth "Pat" Fuchs of Belleville, Ill. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, as well as numerous friends in the area.
A special thanks to all who extended their friendship to Father Morrison on his visits to the United States.
Father Morrison's funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Sacred Heart Church, Georgetown, Guyana.
Funeral: A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 206 Rasp St., Shiloh, Ill., with Monsignor Mattias Nyakatura and the Rev. Dennis Voss officiating.
