David Whiteside Obituary

David Whiteside
David B. Whiteside, 60, of Freeburg, Ill., born Sunday, June 13, 1948, in East St. Louis, Ill., David went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, in Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.
Dave was a kind, gentle and compassionate man who never knew a stranger. He loved his family, good jazz and the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed fishing and bird watching, Dave always rooted for the underdog (except when it came to the Cardinals). His priorities were excellent ...people before things. When his childhood friend heard about his death, he said "They've opened the gates wide for Dave Whiteside!" Many considered him their best friend.
Dave was regarded by many to be one of the best bass players around town. He played with various bands including, Breezin'; First Light and The Facts o' Life. He was the owner of his flooring business for more than 30 years. During that time he made many life-long friends.
Dave has gone home to be with the Lord at an age that is far too young for us, and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gaylon W. and Mickey Fern, nee Schnieder, Whiteside; and a nephew, Rick Whiteside.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Linda, nee Jines, Whiteside; his children, Shelley Gavin of O'Fallon, Ill., Thomas Whiteside of Los Angeles, Calif., Michael Whiteside of Los Angeles, Calif., Tyler Whiteside of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother, Stephen (Susie) Whiteside of Granite City, Ill.; sister, Sharon (Bob) Scharbert of AvonPark, Fla.; Grandson, Cole Gavin; nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the family in honor of David.

Visitation: Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13 at the Kurrus Funeral Home, Belleville, Illinois.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the funeral home with the Rev. Wendell Garrison officiating. There will be a private interment.

Linda,

My deepest sympathy to you and your family upon hearing of Dave's passing. I know you have been comforted by the outpouring of prayers and good wishes that have been expressed in this online guest book... All my memories of Dave as a friend and fellow musician back in E. St. Louis were very warm and positive. He always seemed so upbeat. We will keep you and your family in our prayers...

Dear Linda and Family,
I just heard about Dave from a classmate, and wanted to say how sorry I am. He sounds like a wonderful man, and one who knew where his future lay. I was in Steve's class, so didn't know David well; may you be comforted and blessed by your memories and the knowledge he is in God's arms.

I played in the band Breezin with Dave. Dave was a gifted bass player and singer. He was a warm hearted beautiful person, a perfect gentleman who loved his family very much. It's hard for those left behind to carry on, but Dave is smiling down from a glorious place in Heavern where I'm sure he is making many souls smile.
Linda and family, you have my deepest sympathy and my prayers and the prayers of the Petrak family are with you in your time of sorrow. If there is anything I can do, please call me.

To Dave's family,
Anyone who crossed Dave's path would end up with a smile on their face. I was fortunate to be his neighbor for several years and later in life see him again and recently it seemed like I was running into him all the time. He had a memory that served him well, never seemed to forget anything. Always asking how everyone was and talking about my cousin Brian who lived with us and telling me stories of Mike, Tyler and him at the house when they were little. He is truely one of the nicest people I have ever met. He was proud of all his children and always bragging to me about the accomplishments of all of them have made. He looked forward to hopefully moving to California to be by his boy's and bragged often about Tom's job and Mike's trip to Australia. My heart breaks that he had to leave us so young. To the Whiteside family I am so sorry for your loss, you were all blessed with a great man in your lives and I hope memories bring you comfort.

I was so sorry to learn of Dave's death. The Whiteside's lived on 77th Street and we lived on 76th Street in E. St. Louis. Although we lost contact over the years, he was an old buddy from Harding, Clark and East Side. I have since wondered how he ever rode me around the old neighborhood on the crossbar of his bike. They must have made them bigger then. I'm remembering lots of fun times in the old neighborhood. Steve, I'm so sorry for your loss. You brothers used to be close--I trust you still were.

Linda, we're saddened to hear about Dave. While we haven't seen you two since our 20th reunion in 1986, Linda and I often spoke of Dave with fond memories of all our school years. He called me a few years ago and we caught up on things. Dave will be missed by all of his friends, but the thing that can't be taken away is our memories of all the good times we had listening to the bands and growing up together. Our best wishes to you and your family.
