DeWitt, Iowa - Erica J. Hursey, 66, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 6, 2025, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa, with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial is at Elmwood Cemetery in DeWitt. In memory of Erica, contributions may be made to the DeWitt Referral Center, whose mission she deeply admired:
dewittreferralcenter.org Erica was born into a close and loving family, surrounded by traditions, laughter, and strong bonds that she carried throughout her life. She cherished her parents and siblings, holding close the memories of those who passed and the love of those who remained.
She and her husband, John, built a life of adventure and deep connection. As they raised their four children across the globe, "six together forever" became their family motto-one that shaped their lives, carried them around the world, and held them close through joy and sorrow
They were stationed at Scott Air Force Base from 1979 - 1985, where they became active members of Shiloh Methodist Church and enjoyed the support of nearby family and friends.
Erica loved being a mother and grandmother, and she faced life's joys and challenges, including the loss of a granddaughter, with strength and grace. In retirement, she and John settled in DeWitt, Iowa, and spent winters along the Gulf in Florida. When dementia became part of her story, Erica met it with honesty and heart, holding fast to the moments she could still feel love and be loved. She often said hers was truly "a life well lived" and asked to be remembered with warmth, not sadness.
As she wrote herself:
"When I am gone, do not cry for me; remember me and care for and love each other. And yes, Natalie, you get the ring."
Erica is survived by her husband of 47 years, John Hursey (a Granite City North & McKendree College graduate); her children, John (Rebecca) Hursey Jr., Keith (Mara) Hursey, Monica Hursey, and Natalie Hursey; her beloved grandchildren, Callan, Liam, Rosiland, Leia, Samantha, and Sabrina; her sisters, Jody (Randy) White and Lisa Richards; brother, Cliff (Samantha) Primmer; and many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Abrielle Jean Marie; her parents, Don & Jean Primmer, and siblings, Jackie Primmer, Sandy Primmer, and Kurt Primmer.
