Gregory Jonas Obituary
Lt. Gregory Jonas, 59, of Centreville, Ill., born June 12, 1949, in Centreville, Ill., died Tuesday, June 2, 2009.
Gregory Jonas was born in the city of Centreville formerly known as Fireworks Station, Ill., to his parents, Roy Mathews and Vivian Whigham. He attended East St. Louis Senior High School from 1963 to 1967. After high school Greg attended Texas Tech University in Tyler, Texas from 1968 to 1972. Greg joined the Alorton Police Department in 1976, where he worked for eight years. Later in 1995 Greg joined the Centreville Police Department. In 2004 he was promoted to the position of Lieutenant, which he currently held.
Greg married Ms. Viola Madlock in 2003. They were the most inspiring and happiest couple that you could've met. Gregory "Greg" Jonas, "devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and friend." He was always there when you needed him. Greg will be sadly missed but never forgotten: "Dad you were always there to offer good advice and through the thick of things, your courage and love was always an inspiration."
He was preceded in death by his sister, Elise Hughs.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his dear and loving wife of six years, Viola Jonas of Belleville, Ill.; his loving mother, Ms. Vivian Whigham of Centreville, Ill.; two sons, Jamal Jonas of Centreville, Ill., and Antonio McNamee of Belleville, Ill.; four daughters, Kalidah (Juan) Jonas Carraway and Joni McNamee both of Belleville, Ill., and Jessica McNamee and Annette McNamee both of Cahokia, Ill.; two special grandchildren, Tamondja Smith and Antonio Harris both of Belleville, Ill.; He has 10 beautiful grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends; a best friend, Sgt. Barry Foster,- the Centreville police department and entire community of Centreville, Ill.
Visitation: Friends may call from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Calvary Baptist Church, 901 S. 50th St. Centreville, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will be at Sunset Gardens of Memory, Millstadt, Ill.

I only learned of this yesterday and was very saddened to hear. I attended Texas College with Jonas. Jonas was a "special" kinda person and will be dearly missed. My heartfelt condolescences to the Family. May God continue to bless all of you is my prayer. I will continue to uplift the Family in prayer.

In the line of duty. Only if people really knew what that really means to the loved ones who have their son, husband or father work in law enforcement. My youngest son is a Police Officer for the Raymore PD, a member of the S.W.A.T. Team and a FTO. As a mother, I still wait for that one phone call from his wife, even though I know that he is a good and cautious officer. Anything can go wrong at any time. My heart goes out to the family of Lt. Gregory Jonas. Police Officers' are Heros as much as our military, but to me it's more. The war on the streets is a never ending battle. Another Hero, Lt. Gregory Jonas, you're in God's hands now. May you Rest In Peace. I salute you with the highest Honor. God Bless.

Greg and I attended the 8th grade together.
It was a very small and close-nit class. There were only 8 of us. Two boys and six girls. He was my 'brother'during those times. Hearing of his death was extremely devastating. My heart goes out to his family and friends
