Herman Ostendorf

Herman Christian Friedrich Ostendorf, 96, of Stone Church, Ill., born June 23, 1915, in Venedy, Ill., departed this life Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at the Columbia Convalescent Center in Columbia, Ill.

Mr. Ostendorf was baptized July 11, 1915, by Pastor W. Jaspering and was confirmed on March 24, 1929, at Evangelischen St. Petri Church in Stone Church. He was a lifelong member of the St. Peter United Church of Christ at Stone Church. He spent most of his life farming in the Stone Church area until 1966, when he became custodian at the Okawville High School until his retirement in 1980. He was a founding member of the Elkhorn Hunting and Fishing Club. Herman enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and bee keeping. He especially enjoyed camping with his family and dearly loved taking his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Wihlemina, nee Holtgrewe, Ostendorf, whom he married May 28, 1939, in St. Louis, Mo., and who died January 20, 2003; his parents, C. Fred and Dorothea, nee Klosterhoff, Ostendorf; a son in infancy; four brothers, George, Theodore, Hubert and William Ostendorf and their spouses; and two sisters, Ann Johnson and Selma Dixon and their spouses.

Surviving are his three children, Gene (Chris) Ostendorf of Kirkwood, Mo., Pat Lamm of Columbia and Nancy (Scott) Shubert of Okawville, Ill.; six grandchildren, Tammy (Matt) Ohl of Michigan City, Ind., Tina (Jeff) Underwood and Tessa Lamm (John Snyder) all of Columbia, Ill., Todd (Dawn) Lamm of New Douglas, Ill., Molly Shubert of Park City, Utah and Michael Shubert of Peoria, Ill.; two step grandchildren, Larrie Kempker and Stephanie (Steve) Hersh, all of St. Louis, Mo.; 12 great-children, Genevive and Seraphina Ohl, Griffin, Mallory and Margo Underwood, Brynn, Jennifer and Amy Snyder, Trystan and Iris Lamm and Drew and Janie Hersh; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and other relatives as well as a host of friends.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Peter Building Fund or to the charity of the donor's choice and will be accepted by the Campagna Funeral Home. Online expressions of sympathy may be made at www.campagna

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, and from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Campagna Funeral Home, Okawville, Ill.

Funeral: Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the St. Peter United Church of Christ, in Stone Church, Ill., with Pastor Jeffrey Schwab officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

i was in the Elkhorn club with Herman.
We used to have fish frys with Gladys& the whole gang.
I remember when he was the janitor in okawville.
he always dreamed of going to germany.
