Hilda Schaefer

Hilda Mary Schaefer, nee Frierdich, 93, of Millstadt, Ill., born March 1, 1923 in Columbia, Ill., passed away Friday, March 11, 2016 at the Columbia Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Columbia, Ill.

Hilda was retired as a cook from St. Elizabeth's Hospital. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, Ill., Daughters of Isabella Circle 329, Perpetual Help Council of Catholic Women and was a volunteer at St. Elizabeth's Hospital for 17 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, August J. Schaefer whom she married on August 22, 1945, and who died on Jan. 21, 1971; a daughter, Mary Ann Ortmann who died on Dec. 18, 1972; her parents, William H. and Bertha, nee Menner, Frierdich; her brothers, Elmer and William E. (Helen) Frierdich; and her grandson-in-law, Eric S. Mueller.

Surviving are her son, Monsignor Kenneth J. Schaefer of Herrin, Ill.; her daughter, Norma Jean (Richard) Brune of Millstadt, Ill.; brother, Walter (Agnes) Frierdich of Millstadt, Ill.; her three grandchildren, Monica (Paul) Winkeler of O'Fallon, Ill., Maribeth (Chris) Keeven and Marcia Mueller of Millstadt, Ill.; eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A special thank you to the nurses, CNA's and staff of the Columbia Rehabilitation in Columbia, Ill., Heartland Hospice, for their special care of our mother, and a special thank you to Msgr. Marvin Volk and Msgr. Carl Scherrer for their pastoral care.

Visitation: Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2016, and from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2016, at Leesman Funeral Home, 7 East Mill St., Millstadt, Ill.



Funeral: Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2016, at St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, Ill. Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery in Millstadt, Ill.
