Joseph W. Lanter, 84, of Mascoutah, Ill., born Feb. 13, 1919, in Mascoutah Township, Ill., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Lanter retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of Holy Childhood Catholic Church, Mascoutah, Ill., Holy Name Society, and American Legion Post 292, Mascoutah, Ill. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Louise, nee Wilhelm, Lanter; and a sister, Helen Reeb.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy E., nee Zinck, Lanter, whom he married Nov. 17, 1948, in Mascoutah, Ill.; four sons, Robert J. (Diane) Lanter of Belleville, Ill., Lawrence R. Lanter of Mascoutah, Ill., Ronald P. Lanter of Mascoutah, Ill., and Kenneth G. Lanter of Chicago, Ill.; three daughters, Sharon A. (Michael) McFalls of Madison, Ala., Yvonne M. (Ricky) Johnson of Channahon, Ill., and Connie S. Lanter and friend Dennis Best of Madison, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul J. Lanter of Mascoutah, Ill.; two sisters, Lucille Kistner of Fairview Heights, Ill., and Alice Korte of Belleville, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Raymond Reeb of Wichita, Kan.; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Holy Childhood Memorial Improvement Fund, in the form of Masses, or to Family Hospice.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, and from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Moll Funeral Home, Mascoutah, Ill. A prayer service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral: Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Holy Childhood Catholic Church, Mascoutah, Ill., with Monsignor Jerome Hartlein officiating. Burial will be in Holy Childhood Catholic Cemetery, Mascoutah, Ill.
