Raymond Castello

Raymond F. Castello, 93, of Fairview Heights, Ill., born Sep. 14, 1920, in Troy, Ill., died Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, Ill.

Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was awarded a

bronze star for his service during WW II in Italy. He was retired from Sears after 35 years as a display manager. Mr. Castello was a very creative person who put his talents for design and display to good use volunteering for the Tee Pee organization, the Italian Fest and parade, and for St. Johns United Church of Christ, where he was a member. He was a big supporter of the arts and enjoyed attending events at the Muny and the Fox Theater. He loved plants, flowers, and the beauty of nature. Ray enjoyed spending time and being involved with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Martha, nee Pestone, Castello; a brother, Theodore J. Castello Sr.; and three sisters, Londa Sheu, Delores Manus, and Velma Schlechting.

Surviving are his nieces and nephews; Theodore J. (Barbara) Castello Jr., Terry (Teresa) Castello, Tom (Mary) Castello, Delores (Earl) Louvier, and Jane Mauer; a sister-in-law, Darlene Castello; great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends.

My sons and I would like to extend our sympathy to the family of Ray. We knew him when he worked at Sears in East St. Louis. My sons' father worked for him. He was very kind to our family. We thought a lot of him. He will be missed.

To all the Castello family, we are so sorry for the loss of your Uncle Ray. We only met him a time or two, however it seemed like he never knew a stranger. What a very kind sole. I know he will be truly missed. Terry and Teresa....our hearts break for you. He was truly blessed as viseversa, with you, in his life.

Words cannot express how much Uncle Ray will be missed. He was such a wonderful man who everyone loved being around. We will always treasure the memories we have of all the special times spent together. We are so happy he was able to share in the lives of our boys and that they were able to know such a special person. We love you and miss you dearly. Watch over us all and take care of Colton.

Uncle Ray, a brilliant, intelligent, and loving Man who not only gave everything in his heart to anyone but also sacrificed himself to fight for this country during the War. He is an exceptional person, one that I am so grateful to have grown up around and then had the privilege to introduce my two boys to. He always brought joy to any occasion and had such a strong passion for life and the people around him.

He will be missed dearly here on earth and things won't be the same but Heaven has gained a new Angel. He will now watch over us in a new way.

We salute you Veteran. Thank You for your Service and being such an important part of our lives.
