Raymond Scheibel Obituary

Raymond Scheibel

November 7, 1928 - January 29, 2025

Smithton, Illinois - Raymond F. Scheibel, 96, of Smithton, IL, born November 7, 1928, died Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He devoted his life to his family and his faith. He was an avid and skilled gardener, generously sharing his produce with many. Ray volunteered as a Eucharistic minister and usher. He was involved with various religious organizations associated with the parishes he belonged to throughout his life.

He enjoyed spending time with family, hunting, fishing, woodworking, playing pinochle, a good bowl of popcorn, strong coffee, biscuits & gravy, and a shot of Kümmel. Ray's favorite holiday was Christmas, where he enjoyed listening to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren perform many Christmas carols. Ray was in his "97th year" of life and attributed his longevity to the loving partnership he shared with Gayle, his wife of nearly 66 years.

Ray graduated from Cathedral High School in 1946. He graduated from and was an instructor at Ranken Technical School. He worked as a machinist and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 313 for nearly 80 years. His career began at Specialty Tool in Belleville, IL, continued at Obear-Nester Glass Company in East St. Louis, IL, ending with retirement from St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1994.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gayle Scheibel, (née Herzog), whom he married on July 17, 1954, and who passed away on July 13, 2020; his two sons, Gerard E. Scheibel and Joseph A. Scheibel; his parents August and Rose (née Bohn) Scheibel, his sister Delores (Melvern) Thouvenot; and his brother Ralph Scheibel.

Ray is survived by his ten children: Christine M. (Stephen) Soucy of Belleville, IL; Marjorie A. (August) Werner of Belleville, IL; Therese M. (Richard) Hottenrott of Smithton, IL; Joan A. (Mark) Biekert of Smithton, IL; James R. (Julie) Scheibel of Fort Worth, TX; Angela F. (James) Thomas of Wildwood, MO; William M. (Christina) Scheibel of Millstadt, IL; Cheryl J. (Patrick) Michael of Fairview Heights, IL; Jerome R. (Gwendelyn) Scheibel of Millstadt, IL; and Maria J. (fiancé Jason Muelchi) Watts of Belleville, IL. He is also survived by 33 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren (with one expected in May 2025), his sister, Shirley Bauer of Belleville, IL, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Cedar Trails in Freeburg, IL and Family Hospice for their exceptional care.
