Virgil Gregson

Virgil L. Gregson, 79, of Hecker, Ill., born Sept. 6, 1931, in Hecker, Ill., died Saturday, July 2, 2011, in Red Bud, Ill.

Mr. Gregson was president of Nu Deal Oil Company, a member of the US Navy for three years during the Korean War, mayor of Hecker for six terms, Gibault Booster chairman, FSH Water Commission, Knights of Columbus, Hecker Commercial Club, Volunteer Fire Dept. - Hecker, St. Clement Hospital Building Committee, Human Support Service Board, Kaskaskia Port Authority, St. Augustine Holy Name Society, Monroe County Building Commission, Hecker Sportsman Club and a member of St. Augustine Church, Hecker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester A. and Olivia, nee Wittenauer, Gregson; and a brother, Robert Gregson.

Surviving are his wife, Bernadette M., nee Scherle, Gregson; children,

Donna (Richard) Schilling, Joe (Janet) Gregson, JoAnn (Brian) Baker, Patty (Ray) Brewer, David (Lois) Gregson, Nancy (Rich) Dunivan and Maria (Eric) Wuebbels; grandchildren, Renee (Nick) Krebel, Melissa Shields, Austin Gregson, Jonathan "JD" Gregson, Avery Wuebbels, Max Dunivan, Wendi (Jerrod) Brownson and Warren Baker; great-grandchildren, Sophia Krebel and Thaddeus Brownson; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be made in the form of Masses or to Gibault Catholic High School.

Visitation: Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo, Ill., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Hecker, Ill.

Funeral: Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the church with Father Von Deeke officiating. Interment in St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery in Hecker, Ill.
