February 23, 1942 - December 18, 2022
Bellingham, Washington - Betty Lou Kiner, age 80, of Bellingham, Washington, passed away in her home on December 18, 2022. Born in Billings, Montana, Betty spent her first years in a log cabin on land homesteaded by her grandfather. Marrying in 1961, Betty moved to Portland, Oregon where she supported her husband through medical school and her daughter, Jolynn, was born. The family settled in Bellingham in 1971. Passionate about the environment Betty was instrumental in passing federal legislation banning Oil Super Tankers in Puget Sound. Betty divorced and supported herself as an account while she worked toward her bachelor's degree from Fairhaven College of WWU. Active in Bellingham politics, Betty served on the Planning Commission and was elected to the City Council. In retirement, Betty traveled the world, gardened, sewed, and took art and Tai Chi classes. Betty is survived by her daughter Jolynn Jones, brother Craig Kiner, sister Kathleen Kiner and numerous nieces and nephews. Donations may be made to Betty's named charities: Whatcom Humane Society and Native American Heritage Association.

Betty and were friends beginning in 4th grade. I a sorry to hear of her passing.

Betty was my business partner at Bruton, Kiner and Schellberg, PS for many years prior to her move to the government sector. Competent and always pleasant to work with we remained friends and kept in touch. I remember that she was instrumental in the creation of our wonderful trail system when on the city council. Jolynn, if you are reading this I still remember you as one of children's first babysitters (you were great).

Betty has been a close friend of our family for my entire life. Always there for us, and a true friend. Her absence in our lives will be felt for a long time, but the many fond memories will keep her with us.

Kathleen, Todd and I are so sorry for your loss. I know how close you were to your sister. We always got a kick out of seeing you together...giggling like young girls. Loved it. We are hugging you from afar.
