James Potter Obituary

Born 7/6/38 Lawrence C. Potter and Beatrice Potter nee Bible His father liked to say that Jim's nose was born, and he grew on. Born in Toledo, OH, Jim gravitated to the sea. He moved to Seattle where he shipped out on the University of Washington research vessel TG Thompson and later met his dear Julie. His work was as varied as his interests; he farmed, hired bus drivers for METRO in Seattle, and retired from Western Washington University human resources in 2000 so he could tend flowers for the Port of Bellingham and to serve as elected cemetery commissioner for Woodlawn Cemetery. Gardener, fisherman, hunter, ancient history buff, Jim loved his Saturday opera broadcasts, classical church music at St. Paul's in Bellingham, and tenors. He was a great cook and was honored by bestowal of the name of "Luigi" on his famous Italian sauce, for which he grew herbs, garlic, and tomatoes. He is remembered fondly by his daughters for being a worry-wart, punctual to a fault, and for his sense of the ridiculous including the Musky-toe Song. Survived by wife Julie Potter Marx, daughters Danae and son(inlaw) Graham Johnson, Deborah Potter, all of Ferndale; brothers inlaw Bill Golubics, Warren Marx, William Marx; nephews Damon Golubics and Doug Golubics; cousins Sharon Richards and Jeanne Williams; and precious grandsons Leland and Jude. Twin sister Judy Golubics, parents Larry and Bea Potter have all gone before. Family and friends were Jim's world; a tenacious friend, he is survived by his close high-school buddies George and Dave Farris; Ron Perey; Bill Wittenbrook; friends made at The Lodge in Seattle, WA; Chuck McInnis; Joe and Lennie Kennedy; Kelsey and Trish Hunter; Jim Lemaster; Barb Wavada and Cindy Wilton; and many, many other cherished friends, all of whom have remained closely connected due to his famous sense of humor. He was also a graduate of University of California-Long Beach and Western Washington University. Jim was privileged to spend his last days at St. Francis in Bellingham with friends and family in and out. Special thanks to Hospice and St. Francis' caring staff, and to Fr. Jon Weldon and Fr. Kevin Allen. Jim died peacefully on January 5, 2011. He is free. Celebration of Jim's life occurs at Guiseppe's Al Porto, Bellingham, WA at 3 pm on Saturday, January 22. Condolences and planned attendance to [email protected]. Guiseppe needs numbers! Thank you.

Some lines from Emily Dickinson come to mind:
"Because I could not stop for death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves/ and immortality ..."
