Kristi Johnson Obituary

Kristi Sue Johnson

October 18, 1955 - May 5, 2024

Custer, Washington - Kristi Sue (Nelson) Johnson was born October 18th, 1955, in Lynwood, California to parents Darrell and Constance Nelson. She spent much of her youth in Southern California with her parents and siblings.

Kristi moved with her family to Aurora, Colorado at the age of 14, and graduated from Hinkley High School in 1973. After graduation, Kristi enlisted in the U.S. Navy, completed basic training in Orlando, FL, and served 4 years as a Hospital Corpsman in San Diego, CA. After her active duty tour she served an additional year in the Naval Reserves.

Kristi met Craig M. Johnson while they were both stationed in San Diego, and they married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aurora, CO on December 30th, 1978. They had two children and lived in many places while Craig continued to serve in the Navy, including California, Guam, Florida, San Diego (again), Hawaii, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and ultimately planting in Washington State.

Amidst many military moves, Kristi pursued her passion for caring and helping others by attending multiple colleges and ultimately graduating from University of Hawaii, Manoa with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She used her degree, experience, and empathy to care for the community in Virginia Beach, VA and Whatcom County.

Kristi's hobbies included; diving, arts and crafts, sewing, shopping, vacations to Mexico, crocheting, and collecting (pigs, pebbles, and hummingbirds to name a few). She attended Zion Lutheran Church with her husband where they enjoyed bible studies, fellowship and meals with the church family. Kristi also served the community, along side Craig, as a Whatcom County Support Officer.

Kristi is survived by: her beloved husband of 45 years, Craig; mother, Constance; aunt, Kay; uncle, Douglas; twin sister, Kim (Bob Gilmister); younger sister, Julie (Dan Cahill); younger brother, Eric (Julie); son, Aaron (April); daughter, Cassandra; grandchildren, Elias, Aurora and Esther.

A Celebration of Life and Reception is planned for Saturday, June 8th, 2024, at 4pm at Zion Lutheran Church in Ferndale, WA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Support Officers of Whatcom County at supportofficer.org/give

Craig, Aaron (and April) and Cassandra, Kristi was always so kind to me and had an infectious, loving spirit. I loved visiting with her and hearing the tales about Craig. She will be missed and remembered always.
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

The picture above of Kristi is how I will always remember her. I think I was one of her first babysitters when my family lived next door to the Nelsons in Lynwood.
What an exceptional woman she grew up to be.

Met Kristi while Craig and I were assigned to USS Proteus in Guam. She was a sweet lady who helped with our daughter who was born on Thanksgiving evening in 1980. Kristi will be missed but never forgotten.

We hold dear Kristi lovingly in our heart. Such wonderful memories: our long visits on the phone, her generosity in sharing her creative talents (we cherish the fabric cross she made), her laughter as we sat at our dining room table, and of course her sweet smile. Kristi was truly God´s blessing to all of us .
