Margaret Hansen Obituary

Margaret P. (Lake) Hansen passed away peacefully on Dec. 21, 2016 at her home in Bellingham, WA with her dog Sam at her feet. Margaret was born in Manning, Iowa on Sept. 15, 1924 and baptized on Oct. 12, 1924 at the Manning Zion Lutheran Church. Margaret remained faithful to the Lutheran Church her entire life. She graduated from Manning High School on May 21, 1942. Margaret married LeRoy A. Hansen on May 28, 1942, whom she had known all of her life and was currently serving in the US Army. After the war was over, Margaret and LeRoy moved to Bellingham and spent the rest of their 66-year marriage together until LeRoy's death on Feb. 12, 2009. Margaret had been the long-time manager of the lunch counter at Newberry's Department Store in downtown Bellingham. When Newberry's closed, Margaret went to work for the Bellingham School District where she managed the Sehome High School kitchen for 19 years until her retirement. Margaret's hobbies were cooking, baking, crocheting, working on puzzles, gardening, and let us not forget, cleaning. Margaret was a Mariners fan and also enjoyed watching the Seahawks. To Margaret's delight, most of the last ten years has been spent with her dog Sam at her feet. Sam has been placed with Margaret's great-nephew, Tyler, who had known Sam for many years. Margaret is survived by her brothers George Lake of Bellingham, E.R. Lake of Florida, and her sister Dorothy Larsen of Iowa, along with numerous nieces and nephews. A service will be held for Margaret on Friday, Jan. 6, 2017 at 11:00am at Moles Farewell Tributes - Greenacres at 5700 Northwest Ave. Ferndale. In lieu of flowers, Margaret's wish was for everyone to donate to their local chapter of the ASPCA to help Sam's friends.
