Some memories of Robert J. Buckenmeyer
Every visit we shared with Bob left us with an unforgettable memory that brings a smile to our face whenever we think of him.
It was early in 1959, when I met my brother-in-law Bob Buckenmeyer in Williams Lake, BC. Frances, Bob, and his sister Peg, drove up from Maple Falls, WA to visit our family. At the time, I was ten and Frances was twenty.
From my viewpoint, Frances was happily married to Bob, enjoyed a genuine friendship with Peg, and had become a full-fledged member of the Buckenmeyer family. My family immediately realized that Bob was one of a kind and enjoyed putting his own spin on life, in a more casual and daring manner than the rest of us.
Always living hundreds of miles apart, our next visit was three years later, when Bob & Frances drove the "Hudson" from Maple Falls to the Alberta homestead my dad had acquired north of Bonanza, at the age of 61 years. The timing of their visit worked well for Mom & I to hitch a ride with them back to Quesnel on their return trip to Maple Falls. It was a very memorable drive for both Mom & I.
We were proud and pleased to be passengers travelling in Bob´s 1939 Hudson. However, the trip from Dawson Creek to Chetwynd, BC, was on a rough gravel road with numerous potholes, and an exceptionally long and winding hill, on both sides of the bridge crossing the Pine River. Bob provided us with the fastest trip we ever experienced for that journey. Arriving safely in Chetwynd, my mother (who said nothing during the drive) quietly said, "That was 67 miles in 67 minutes." She had been timing the trip on her watch. Obviously, the Hudson was well-tuned up at the time.
Other than my parents, Frances & Bob were the first relatives to meet Dennis. We had travelled to Vancouver for the long Remembrance Day/Veterans Day weekend. We made a pit stop in Maple Falls, for an introduction, along the way.
Our family always enjoyed visits to Maple Falls, and usually Bob had a surprise in store for us.
o One time it was a risky car ride with him, when on the spur of a moment he decided to participate in a game of chicken with unsuspecting oncoming drivers, on the narrow and winding roads around Maple Falls. Luckily, we did survive that escapade.
o Another time, we managed a visit to an actual car racing event, at a legitimate racetrack, close to Bellingham, WA.
o Darryl & Devin shared experiences with their "big" cousins mostly involving fishing &/or discovering what could happen to frogs at Maple Creek.
o For Dennis & I, a visit to Maple Falls sometimes meant a visit to "Holy Smoke A Tavern." There, as non-pool players, we could watch and appreciate the skills both Bob & Frances had. We knew they often won prizes in Pool tournaments.
In 1978, Bob & Frances arrived, and we enjoyed a family visit with them at our place. Dennis welcomed the unexpected help he received from Bob and his four sons (aged 13, 16, 17, and 20). They got busy and helped sheet the plywood roof of our newly attached garage. At the time, Darryl (9) & Devin (6) offered horse rides to their bigger cousins.
From 1990 - 2008, Dennis commuted to work at Vancouver Airport, and we enjoyed drop-in visits to Maple Falls (after skiing at Mount Baker). We know Bob and family thought it was ridiculous that people paid to "slide down Mount Baker." We thought it odd to have Mt. Baker in your backyard and not enjoy a few ski runs every winter. After a ski day, we would either drop by for a little visit, or they would join us for a visit over Chinese Food in Sumas.
After Frances passed, we shared Christmas card exchanges, and phone calls with Bob (initiated by him, or by us).
Sadly, due to health reasons, we were unable to attend Bob´s 90th birthday celebration in July 2023, but we did wish him Happy 90th Birthday by phone.
Bob had a unique personality that left an indelible mark and memories for everyone who ever met him.
