Shirley Gelwicks Obituary

Shirley Gelwicks
September 6, 1933 - April 8, 2023
Everson, Washington - Shirley (Larsen) Gelwicks, 89, of Everson passed away on April 8, 2023. Shirley was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who is greatly missed.
Born the youngest of eight children, Shirley grew up near the Everson Auction Barn. After graduating from Nooksack High School, Shirley attended Nursing School at what is now Western Washington University. Shirley married Richard (Dick) Gelwicks in the summer of 1952 and the couple lived for several years in Pennsylvania. After the birth of their first son, Harold, Dick and Shirley moved back to Washington where they had three more children - Susan (Postma), Chuck, and Scott. Shirley was an amazing seamstress and worked for Tisdale's in Bellingham. For years, homes in Whatcom County displayed expertly crafted handmade draperies by Shirley. Dick and Shirley spent many years farming including milking cows and raising chickens, ducks, rabbits, multiple horses, and one ornery mule. In addition to farming and homemaking, Shirley drove school bus for Nooksack Valley School District. She was an avid and loyal Pioneer and both Dick and Shirley spent countless hours rooting for their children and grandchildren at sports, music, and theater events.
Shirley was a tireless worker and rarely sat still. She was a master gardener and a wonderful cook. Shirley was well known for being able to conjure up a delicious meal for a crowd with little to no warning. There was always room for one more at her table. A talented artist, Shirley created many beautiful quilts and crafts, which she shared with her family and friends. Shirley loved music, especially blue grass and was willing to travel to join a good blue grass festival. One of Shirley's favorite activities was to go camping and fishing with her children and grandchildren. Always patient, Shirley could spend hours in a boat, trolling a line and soaking up nature. The family plans to hold a private ceremony to honor Shirley at one of their favorite camping and fishing lakes.
Shirley is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, siblings and one grandchild. She loved them all.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Whatcom Hospice.

Sending you our sympathy in the loss of Shirley. We have great memories of childhood times at the farm in Blaine, going to State basketball tournaments with Duck and Shirley and visiting through the years. We always appreciated her laugh and "can do" spirit.
