Sid Nesbit Obituary

Sid Nesbit
July 27, 1938 - February 18, 2023
Bellingham, Washington - Sid H Nesbit died peacefully at home on February 18, 2023. Sid lived a full adventurous life filled with friendships, family, artistic creativity and travel. He was born to Jim and Florence Harrison Nesbit in Seattle on July 27, 1938. Along with his younger brother, David, the family also lived in Spokane, Walla Walla, WA and San Bernardino, Riverside and Berkeley CA. Summers were spent at Camp Orkila on Orcas Island as a teenager. He became a counselor and his son and grandchildren followed in his footsteps. Sid went to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo where his life as an amazing architect began. At only 24, he designed many unique homes overlooking Laguna Beach using lumber from railroad trestles he purchased. Those creations still inspire great design. Sid moved to Bellingham in 1963 where he soon designed some of the Northwest's most beautiful timeless homes, resorts, and numerous commercial buildings. His design work took him to Hawaii, Alaska, Wyoming, and even back to California. To live in a Sid Nesbit home remains an honor. Sid moved his family to Hawaii in the early 70's where he used his design and building skills to develop Kauai Kailani, Mokihana Lodge, and the Bull Shed restaurant on the island of Kauai. This venture led him to designing the infamous Cliff House restaurant in Bellingham. In addition to being an architect, he was a skilled carpenter, builder, and contractor. He generously gave his time and knowledge to all and especially to various community projects. He was a passionate advocate of the environment and incorporated his love of the surroundings and natural light in all of his designs. He was recently given the distinction by Whatcom County Planning Department of being the last architect to receive a building permit for a complete set of hand drawn plans. If you have a set, frame it and cherish it. Sid enjoyed his cars, but loved his Saabs the most. Early on, he would pack his family into his Jaguar XKE for weekly night skiing at Pilchuck and Grouse Mountains. They skied powder slopes wherever they could and even skied mountains in Europe. He was an accomplished sailor both cruising and racing in the Northwest and Hawaii. He added pilot to his accolades and thrilled us all with many flying adventures. More than anything, Sid loved roaming the Western States and Canada on his Triumph Motorcycle with his best traveling buddies, Leslie, his sons and Peter Dyck. Other notable adventures included driving his Kawasaki motorcycle over 4000 miles to Wisconsin with Leslie on the back, where together they enjoyed the world famous Oshkosh Air Show. He piloted his 1950's era two- seater Aeronca Champ float plane from Juneau AK to Bellingham WA, again with Leslie, where they spent a lonely night on a quiet beach with just one sleeping bag, a tuna fish sandwich and a small hand gun to be used for protection from the bears. It's a damn good thing the bears were not active that night. And it's too bad they didn't land sooner that evening as when the sun came up the next morning, they were just yards away from a friend's cabin. Sid leaves behind his wife of 50 years, his brother, his sons, grandchildren, and extended family, all who adored him. Cats are sad, seagulls are hungry and the Saab is for Sale! We all love you Sid, you will be missed! A celebration of his life will be held April 30, at the NSEA campus.

My condolences to Leslie, Dave, his entire family and to all those who will miss Sid.
I was just thinking about visiting him, again, to take a moment to share, personally, with him my gratitude for what he contributed to my life. I´m saddened I did not take that opportunity. He will never know what a significant influence he has had in my life.... Regretfully, I didn´t take the time to thank him.
I had the good fortune of working for Sid as a very young man. I was as green as they come when he hired me as a draftsman. For several years, he patiently helped me plot a course, teaching me the basic skills of a draftsman and carpenter but more significantly, teaching me more about being a better man. He taught me much about integrity. Those initial opportunities he gave me eventually led me to a successful career designing homes and building them.

He was generous with his Rainier beer, cheap cigars, canned jalapeño peppers and humor.
Thank you for completely letting go of the controls of the plane that morning, you helped teach me to fly!
Thank you Sid
You will be missed,
Alexei Ford

Sid was legendary for us all who had the opportunity to know him and to work on of his projects. A one of a kind character, I still keep some of his blueprints just to remind of a more light hearted and creative time, gone by.
Condolences to Leslie, Dave and family.

Sid was a great human being and gave me so much encouragement and tutoring while beginning my career as an architectural illustrator. I worked with Mike Smith and Sid in the remodel basement along with their black lab and "Max" the Cat, or the Chairman of the Board we called him. I learned a great deal from Sid, maybe more about life and living than anything else. I served as model builder, renderer, draftsman and construction gopher with great joy and eyes wide open. We shared a passion for motorcycles, travel, and airplanes. I still ride my Triumph today and think of him often while on my many travels I´m taking late in life. The best advice he gave me was to forget drafting and pursue my rendering work and just keep doing what you´re good at. It will pay off. My condolences to Leslie and all of Sid´s extended family.
Sincerely, Rick Mullen

Worked at Thermal Reduction Company (TRC) back in the 80's with Sid and Leslie. They were both a hoot! Didn't know what a wonderful life they lived . . . Bill Bean

What a joy it was to know Sid. Many years ago on my way to Kauai to help with the after hurricane Iniki rebuild Sid came to my send off party. So many wonderful memories, thank you Sid!

Sid hired me as a draftsman when I was less than two years out of college. He was the first employer I had where Design Matters. His sense of scale, proportion, materials and color were inspiring. His influence has profoundly influenced the architect I am today. Working in his basement studio with his cat on my drawing board, his dog at my feet, cool jazz on the stereo, these are memories I will cherish forever. RIP Sid.

Sorry to hear about Sid's passing. His mother and mine were best friends from their sorority days onward. We had so many family get-togethers in California. When he came to the Northwest, my parents' home was the first one he designed. What a talent! My condolences to his family.

A wonderful obituary describing a uniquely talented man. Sid was not only talented but gentle and unassuming, interesting and easy to be around. May he rest in peace.

Very sad and deepest sympathies to all friends and family. I left this message with Mike Smith today:
I was just talking about Sid yesterday...was telling someone about one of his drawing details that had a note that said:

"Nail the hell out of it here"

Still Makes me laugh. He was a character I will never forget.
