Alice Sanders Obituary

SHAFTSBURY -- Alice Sanders, beloved wife of Clyde H. Sanders Sr., a resident of Twitchell Hill Road, passed away at her home Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, with her family at her bedside.

Born in Bennington on Dec. 20, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Dorothy (Dorman) Carpenter. She received her education in Bennington schools.

Mr. and Mrs. Sanders were married in Greenwich, N.Y. in 1956. In earlier years, Mrs. Sanders was employed at Schmeltzer and then Nastech. Her home and family were her main interests, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her dog Chrissy. Alice’s love for dogs was evident. She especially loved basset hounds and had bred and raised many bassets over the years.

The last two years of her life, Alice was a strong advocate for the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. In 2003, Alice was one of the survivors who carried the torch during the first lap at the Relay Walk. In 2004, she spent numerous hours fund-raising for the Relay for Life. Also, during the past two years, she was able to escape the burden of having cancer when she was driving her red Mustang convertible. Alice’s home was often considered a safe haven for many and a welcome place for the neighborhood kids. Her door was always open and an extra plate was always available at the dinner table if unexpected company happened to drop by.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Clyde H. Sanders Sr. of Shaftsbury; three daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Tom Dockum, their daughters and spouses Nikki and Jeff Johnson, and Kati and Louis Beveraggi; Noreen and Mark Gardner and their children, Mackenzie, Logan, Keegan, Torin and Jordan; Doreen and Gary Kinney and their children, Ryan, Carson, Haley, and Robert. She is also survived by one son, Clyde H. Sanders Jr., and his children, Jason and Emelia; two great-granddaughters, Lauren Johnson and Samantha Beveraggi; four sisters, Beatrice O’Dell of Bennington, Leona Willard of Whitney Point, N.Y., and Linda Holland and Judy Bushee, both of Pownal; two brothers, Lawrence Carpenter of Bennington and Roger Hill of Thomaston, Conn.; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Sanders was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred Thompson and Janet Regan; and three brothers, Raymond Carpenter, John Carpenter and Donald Carpenter.

Funeral services will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Friday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Benoit officiating. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Mrs. Sanders may be made to the Cancer Society Relay for Life, through the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

Aunt Alice,

You hold a very a special place in my heart.., you were an incredible woman, mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, neighbor, and friend. You had more strength and courage than anyone I know. You will be an inspiration to me always and an angel in my heart forever.

In her eyes

the look of loving,

In her smile

The warmth of caring.

In her hands

the touch of comfort,

In her heart

the gift of sharing.

Dear Clyde, Bubby, Kathy, Doreen, Noreen & Families...

Alice was the most sincere, truest, nicest friend and family

That I have ever known…

Her goodness shows and remains, within her whole family….

What a tribute that is to her…

This is something I read and wanted to share with everyone

What Cancer Cannot Do:

It cannot cripple love

It cannot shatter hope

It cannot corrode faith

It cannot destroy peace

It cannot kill friendship

It cannot suppress memories

It cannot silence courage

It cannot invade the soul

It cannot steal eternal life

It cannot conquer the spirit

This Source was Unknown but I believe, it was Alice...

in every single line...

My Love and Prayers to you all... Always, Bonnie

Dear Clyde, Kathy, Bubby, Nor and Dor,

I am so, so sorry to hear of Alice's passing. I saw her the last time I was in Bennington and we had a nice visit. It was always good to see her and catch up on all of your families. She was so proud of all of you.

I always enjoyed being with her as a kid, and teen because she was always kind, cheerful and encouraging. She loved children so much and always had time for them. She always welcomed me and pulled out a chair when I would find time pop in on her on visits "home" so that we could visit and reminisce.

My deepest sympathy to all of you. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Love,

Nancy (Bull) LeBarron

To Nor and family,

Your mom's kindness to a young step-grandchild will never be forgotten. When Derrick was young and going to visit with you, your mom always made him feel like he was her grandchild and part of the family. I will never forget her kindness to my son. He always speaks very fondly of Gram Sanders as do I.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family...

A really great and kind lady has left us, never to be forgotten.

Kathy, Tom and family: Our condolences to you and yours. So hard to lose a loved one, especially someone as wonderful as Alice. Ken loved the line about the red Mustang Convertible (he has an old 68 mustang) as a source of joy.

When my Mother passed away I took comfort in John 14 "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."

Christ's Peace and Grace to you at this difficult time,

Marlene, Ken, Jenny & Mary Katherine
