Doye O. Stevens

PETERSBURGH, N.Y. -- Doye O. Stevens, 53, of Old Orchard Way, beloved husband of Mary Lou Babcock Stevens, died May 23, 2003 at his residence.

Born in Petersburgh on March 22, 1949, he was the son of the late Frank and Florence Anna Crandall Stevens. He was a graduate of Berlin Central High School, class of 1967.

Doye was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was a member of Albany Local 370 and worked as a commercial carpenter for more than 30 years.

Doye was an avid hunter and fisherman and he encouraged these sports among others. He was known for his beneficence to scores of youths with hunting and fishing equipment. His kindness will be remembered by a scholarship fund for students who participate in these sports.

After Doye lost his ability to hunt and fish, he spent much of his time as a prayer warrior. His special focus was on children with cancer and the lepers in Thailand.

Survivors in addition to his wife include: two sons, John Stevens of Berlin and Frank Stevens of Petersburgh; three sisters, Jane Wesley of Petersburgh, Lydia Stevens of Hoosick Falls, and Marion Burdick of Pownal, Vt.; one brother, Earl Stevens of Petersburgh; he is also survived by two grandsons, Shayne Eric Stevens of Berlin and Joshua Erik Brock of Ft. Belvoir, Va., two nieces, Wendy Weaver and Debbie Hoffman, both of Petersburgh, as well as several other nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. from the Landmark Baptist Church, Berlin.

There will be no calling hours.

Interment will be held in Meadow Lawn Cemetery, Petersburgh.
