During World War II, James enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on various ships throughout the next four years. James was honorably discharged in 1949 and then recalled by the U.S. Navy to serve in the Korea War.
On July 5, 1952, James married Eleanor Hallenbeck and settled in Brooklyn, NY. Together they raised four children: Roger, Virginia, Helen, and Stephanie. With three of the four children grown and flown, James, Eleanor and their youngest daughter moved to Ozone Park, NY. James spent decades holding various product quality control inspector positions and retired in 1992 from EDO Corporation, Government Systems Division. In 1994, James and Eleanor moved to Sandgate Vermont, where they owned land and a cottage, full time following his retirement. In July 2021 James with the assistance of his youngest daughter, his son-in-law, and granddaughter he took the long journey to Patchogue, NY to reside at Village Walk which would finally bring him closer to his family.
