John Redding Obituary

John H. Redding, 78, a resident of Main St., in Bennington, VT died Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born in Peabody, MA October 9, 1943. He was the son of the late Raymond P. Redding and Mary Louise (Dunn) Redding. John received his education in Peabody, MA and was a graduate of Peabody High School. John served in the United States Navy. He married the former Sandra Dunlop in 1969. John was employed as a clerk at the United States Post Office in both Peabody, MA and Bennington, VT. He also worked at Price Chopper in Bennington. John was an avid sportsman. In earlier years he drove stock car at the New England Dragway. A World Class Power Lifter, John was a four-time National Champion, New England Champion, Pan American and North American Champion. He was the first inductee into the New England Powerlifting Hall of Fame. John pitched softball for the Peabody Elks Softball team and coached both T-Ball and Bennington Senior League Baseball. He was also an avid bowler. He was a member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567 and was voted Elk of the Year in 2020. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 13. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Redding of Bennington. Two sons and their spouses, John and Lisa Harrington Redding and Paul and Tarah Kinney Redding of Bennington and a grandson Chris Redding of Bennington, VT. along with several dear cousins and friends that continue to reside on the Northshore of Massachusetts. He was pre-deceased by a half-brother, Robert McGregor. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday January 30, from noon to 2:00 p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of John H. Redding may be made to the Bennington Elks Club through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201. Guest book condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net. All members of the Bennington Elks Club are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to conduct their services. The American Legion Post 13 will be offering their service at 1:30 p.m. We would like to thank the Southwest Vermont Regional Cancer Center for the many years of professional care and kindness provided to John and our family.
