Robert Greene Obituary

Robert Greene 1922 - 2008 BENNINGTON Robert "Bob" Greene, 85, of Chapel Road and founder of Greene's Oil passed away on Friday, June 13, 2008. Born in Shaftsbury on Oct. 16, 1922, he was the son of Harry and Minnie Gates Greene of Bennington. Bob was married in December of 1943 to Bertha (Loomis) Greene. They owned and operated Greene's Oil together until Bertha's death in September of 2003. In earlier years, Bob enjoyed boating and going to the Laconia Races. He always loved watching wrestling and car racing on television. Bob leaves a nephew, Butch Greene; a niece, Cindy Greene; great-nephew, Josh Greene, and two great-nieces, Amy Andrews and Lynn Greene. He also leaves his loving employees, Teddy Hill, Melody Niles, Gail Harrington, Joe Houran, Lester Lockwood, Mark Niles, Adam Cross, Tim Hewson, Josh Greene, Mike Greene Sr. and Mike Greene Jr., and close friends, Jill Fortier and Bobbie Caslin. Bob also leaves his many caring customers. He was everyone's friend and hero. FUNERAL NOTICE: At Bob's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and donations, prayers and thoughts would be appreciated. May Bob's gift of giving and caring continue through all those he has touched throughout his life. In memory of Bob and Bertha's life, we would appreciate any stories and pictures that customers and friends may want to share for a memorial wall at Greene's Oil. The office will also be closed in observance on Tuesday, June 17. Arrangements are under the direction of the MAHAR and SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

When I was little, Bob Green brought oil to the house. I remember the way Bob always was smiling, even on those below zero days when his hands must have been raw from the cold. He was a real gentleman.
