William Maloney Obituary

William S. Maloney, 56, died peacefully in Port Clyde, Maine on May 22, 2021. Billy, as he was known, was born on April 8, 1965 in the Bronx (New York), to the Rev. William Sidney Maloney, IV and Ellen Holmes Maloney. The family moved from New York to Vermont following the death of Billy's father in 1971. Billy grew up in Dorset, VT and attended the Dorset School before going to North Country School in Lake Placid, NY where he graduated in 1979. Billy continued on to Northfield Mount Hermon School where he graduated in 1983 and then attended the University of Vermont.

Billy's work ranged from dairy farming and gardening to logging and forestry and many in things in between. Billy worked in the ski industry for over 15 years where he taught and coached alpine and freestyle snowboarding. He was the assistant coach to the US junior national team from 1997-1998 taking them to the Junior World Championships in Switzerland. Billy received his certification in coastal navigation from the Ocean Masters Sailing Academy. In 2001, Billy completed firefighter training with the National Wildfire Coordinating Group. Billy loved flying planes and worked at the Rutland airport. For the last seven years, Billy worked with lobsterman Justin Thompson of the "Ruthless" in Port Clyde, Maine where he was affectionately known as "Cow Farmer."

Billy is survived by his mother, Hon. Ellen Holmes Maloney and step-father of 40 years, John F. Ezell, of Dorset, VT; his sister, Virginia Maloney Wilkins "Missy" of Walpole, NH, nephew William and niece Caitlin. Also important to Billy were his uncles, aunts (Meg and Brooks Robbins of Hingham, MA, and David and Brenda Holmes of Spanish Fork, AL) and his several cousins with whom he shared many happy adventures.

To the core, Billy was a kind, empathetic helper. He genuinely enjoyed looking out for both people and animals and will be missed by many.

A private celebration of Billy's life will be held in Port Clyde, ME on June 17, 2021.

In memory of Billy, gifts may be made to: Neighbor to Neighbor of St. George, PO Box 172 Tenants Harbor, ME 04860 or WERU Community Radio, PO Box 170 East Orland, ME 04431, or a charity of your choice.

The family also suggests that a "Cans not Cards" campaign would suitably honor Billy. Instead of sending a card, please donate a can(s) to the Manchester Community Food Cupboard with his name if you like."

Billy’s sparkle certainly made an impression on many when he arrived in Dorset. He would drive our families big Buick to take many neighborhood kids for ice cream. I always enjoyed my encounters with Billy. He was quick to laugh and you always felt that he was truly interested in what was going on in your life. You never knew where his conversation would take you. I will miss your smile, sense of adventure, energy, positive attitude, hugs and laugh. You certainly had a way of engaging with life. Shine on! Much love to his family and friends.

Hello Billy,

I cherish and remember you Billy playing ultimate frisbee with you at the Rec Center in Manchester, Vt. This is where we met and a brief but joyful friendship was created full of so much laughter, comedy, and genuine kindness that you showed. You were always so approachable, and just so damn funny! It was hard to play the game while you were making us all laugh at your antics and slant on the world. You were a true character full of so much zest for life, creativity and always smiling.

Rest Billy.

What an great journey you have had! Your laughter still plays in my head since 1984.

Ultimate!
