He joined the Masons and became past deputy grand master from 1956 to 1957. He received his 50-year pin from the Grand Lodge.
While in Cheshire, he worked at the former Cheshire Garage doing many jobs there and was affectionately known as “Hap.”
In Cheshire and Maine, he was a longtime member of the volunteer fire departments. He also played the trumpet and sang at many events. He was the co-founder of the Men’s Interfaith Breakfast in Cheshire and had an avid interest in model trains.

Thinking of you all at this time. Both of your parents were a wonderful blessing to the church and the community of Cheshire. I remember most your dad baptizing me in March of 1969 at Morningside. I screamed and he very nicely overlooked my anxiety with a smile.

I have since learned that Baptists should like water!! I also remember him driving everyone to the school of missions at Morningside. The big thrill was to get the seat over the transmission(totally unsafe and illegal) and to feel important to be sitting next to your dad and talking as he drove along. And I remember him singing "Surely Goodness and Mercy" many times as a solo in church. He was faithful and his work lives on in many lives today. That is his legacy!

Dear Susan, Leslie, and Carolyn and families,

My heart is with you in the loss of your Dad. He made such an impact of the lives of so many people, and his spirit will live on through all of those whose lives he touched.

Dear Leslie, Susan, and Carolyn, The world is a sadder place for so many of us without your dad. I have such great memories of our serious discussions in BYF -- and fun, too. I was so looking forward to seeing him again, and all of you last Sunday. I'm sorry that I'll be at the funeral today in spirit only (due to work commitments). Love, Steph
