Charles Martin Obituary

Charles W. Martin Jr. 88, of Leominster, MA, died peacefully on May 16th, surrounded by several members of his family. Charles was born in Port Washington, NY on June 16, 1934. Charles was the son of Dr. Charles W. Martin, Sr., and Elizabeth Campbell Martin. Charles is survived by his sister, Gail Lawson of PA and his five daughters; Sheryl Martin-Moe of Oakland, CA, Cindy Engelhardt-Greatshell of Providence, RI, Gail Martin Schmidt of Bristol, CT, Nanci Roberts of Pittsfield, MA and Melissa Martin of Leominster, MA, two sons; Kenneth Martin of Charlotte, NC and Charles W. Martin III of Woodbridge, VA, 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Charles is predeceased by his first wife, Irene Marino Martin of Pittsfield, MA, second wife Joan Andersen Martin of Pittsfield, MA and best friend and companion Mary Pat Howe of South Hadley, MA.

Charles graduated from Manhasset High School, NY and went on to earn a BS degree from Davis and Elkins College, WV, an MA degree from Adelphi University, NY and an Ed.D Degree from California Coast University, CA. He retired from the Pittsfield Public School system in 1993 after 24 years as Chairman of the Business Dept. at Taconic High School. Charles was also Director of Adult and Continuing Education in Pittsfield for 7 years and was previously Chairman of the Business Dept. at Carey High School on Long Island for 12 years as well as an Adjunct Professor of Business at Berkshire Community College for 16 years.

Charles was an avid reader, traveler, jokester, and, much to his own chagrin, a long-time Baltimore Orioles fan. Spending time with his family gave him his greatest pleasure.

The family of Charles Martin would like to thank the kindness, compassion, and generosity of the staff at Benchmark Senior Living at Leominster Crossing and Ascend Hospice of Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Charles' name to: Hospice Foundation of America, hospicefoundation.org

A private burial celebration will be at the convenience of the family.
