David Weisgal Obituary

David Weisgal
1932-2009
David Weisgal passed on December 23, 2009, after a lengthy illness.
Born May 27, 1932, in Toronto, Canada. His father, Meyer Weisgal, founded the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Isreal.
A graduate of Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School and Brandeis University, where David earned a degree in political science.
As a war veteran David served from 1954 to 1956 in Germany as a specialist first class.
From 1962 to 1974, he continued his father's vision as the head of the Weizmann Institute's fundraising efforts out of the New York offices. In 1975 he and his second wife, Florence Brooks-Dunay, purchased and transformed a 33 room mansion into what the New York Times refered to "as the most romantic inn in the Berkshires" located next to Tanglewood called Wheatleigh. In June 1980 Wheatleigh was sold and David and Florence moved to Palm Beach, where golf and tennis were his passions.
David is survived by his two sons, Benjamin and Jonathan; his grandchildren, Bryan and Leah; his stepchildren, Stephanie, Nicky, and Edward Brooks and Peter Dunay; his sister, Helen Amir and brother, Michael Wager; as well as by his wife, Florence, who cannot imagine life without the warmth of his love and who thanks him for illuminating her life and making her world a happier place.

I too am a very old friend of Benjamin and Jonathan. Benjy, as he went by then, and I were in the same small class at B'Nai Jeshurun together, Jonathan a year back. I remember well a birthday party at their house; I remember the Batman Costume and I even remember that Benjy, I believe, had a cut from a scissor in his eye. Benjy and I use to sing together. We were a very close group of classmates, and it is because I was interested in learning what has become, I looked up the family; only to find this. I remember David as a tall very handsome man, at that party. My thoughts are very much with the family right now. I'm so sorry for the loss of your father, Benjamin and Jonathan.

I became acquainted with David during the period in the late seventies when he ran Wheatleigh and I worked at the Lenox Post Office. He impressed me as a man who was greatly enjoying this experience of life that we find ourselves in. My condolences to all his family.

I have very fond memories of David, having worked for the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science for quite a few years. Just knowing he is not here makes me sad. I send sincere condolences to all his loved ones, specifically to Jonathan, with whom I have kept in touch.

I am an old friend of Benjamin and Jonathan, who based on how much time I spent in their 239 CPW apartment, was almost a third son to the Weisgals. While I have not seen David in over 35 years, I will never forget what a nice guy and cool dad he was. To the entire family, I am sorry for your loss.
