Ernest DeGiorgis Obituary

Ernest Frederick DeGiorgis, Jr., 97, lifelong resident of Dalton, passed away peacefully at Craneville Place of Dalton on September 16, 2025.

He was born in Dalton on February 6, 1928 to the late Ernest F. DeGiorgis, Sr., and Hazel M. Irish DeGiorgis.

A graduate of Dalton High School, he also took some classes in Pittsfield.

Mr. DeGiorgis married the former Julia T. Murray on March 29, 1948 at St. Agnes Church in Dalton. She predeceased him on June 3, 1997.

Ernie was a United States Coast Guard Veteran, having served during World War II.

He worked for 22 years at Crane and Company as a project engineer, retiring in 1993. He also worked for Harrington Plumbing and Western Massachusetts Supply - Heating Systems.

An accomplished and passionate woodworker, he built two houses, countless pieces of furniture and other wood pieces for his family. Some pieces you could find at local charity auctions, which he donated kindly to. He was an avid athlete and enjoyed running, skiing, and especially loved biking. Ernie rode on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail almost daily, in any weather, since it was built and may have the most mileage of any rider. He was a happy man and loved to make people laugh.

Mr. DeGiorgis is survived by his son, Ernest "Butch" DeGiorgis, III., and wife Jacqueline of North Adams; three daughters, Donna Pais and husband Edward of Boca Raton, FL, Laura Snyder and husband Thom of Dalton and Barbara Aaron and husband Homes of Dalton. Eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Frederick M. DeGiorgis, and brothers, Donald DeGiorgis and wife Barbara and Richard DeGiorgis and wife Lois.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside services will be held, Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Dalton. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Dalton CRA in care of Dery-Foley Funeral Home, 890 E. Main St. Dalton, MA 01226.

Yesterday

My condolences to the DeGiorgis family. I worked with Ernest at Cranes a while ago, some 40 years ago to be exact. He was a complete gentleman and one of the kindest person I ever met.

Butch, even through death of a parent, we still feel them among us. You'll find phrases or actions he did, you do. It's more noticeable now, since his death. Be assured, we are sending you positive energy and love during this time. May his memory be a blessing to you and your family.

It was always a joy to stop and chat with Ernie on the Ashuwillticook Trail. He will be missed by many who had that privilege.

Ernie was one of my favorite patients. Just last week I was admiring the beautiful handmade wooden bowl he made me and given to me 10 yrs ago.
Ernie had such a sweet soul.

Ernie was a great guy. He introduced me to riding recumbent trikes which my wife and I enjoy as much as possible today. My ride today will be in memory of Ernie. I loved discussing DIY projects and sports with Ernie whenever we visited Dalton. While I may have heard some of his stories more than once in recent years, I still enjoyed our discussions in what I consider to be his room. RIP Ernie - I will miss you.
