Geri Walsh Obituary

Geri Berry Walsh, loving sister, friend, and pet owner, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 after a long illness. She was born in Wareham, MA to Francis and Marion Walsh.

She graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1966 and spent most of her life in Richmond, MA.

She taught art in the Pittsfield school system for 39 years, retiring in 2005. After retirement, she returned to Capeless and Williams schools each spring for several years to plant bulbs with the kindergarteners and in the winter to made Model Magic snowmen with them.

Geri spent most of her life in Richmond, MA. She loved to travel, garden, collect art glass marbles, paint and embroider and had many pets to keep her company over the years. She volunteered for many years at the Berkshire Humane Society in various capacities from designing t-shirts and even brochures to painting a mural in the training area of the old shelter. She also fostered dogs and helped with summer camps.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara and her husband Albert Bates of Chelmsford, MA. She had a continuing close friendship with Lucy St. James and Judith and Alexander Nardacci for 60 years. They will miss her greatly. She is also survived by Lucy's daughter Nell and grandson Otis and Judy's son Peter and daughter Cricket and her wife, Mary Ferguson, with whom Geri had a special relationship.

A memorial scattering of her ashes will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society or Heifer International in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Geri was a best friend for 60 years and was like a second mother to my children. She was intelligent, kind and generous and a great traveling companion. She loved flowers and colors and never met a dog she couldn't make friends with. She was creative and a great artist, and instilled in many Pittsfield students the love of art and positive feelings of their own artistic abilities. I am trying to learn to navigate in a world without her.

She was a person whose everpresent kindness and thoughtfulness for others was unequaled. She was a stunningly creative artist in every possible medium (shy of chainsawing totems) and her work shone with intelligent observation, a feeling for each subject, incredibly delicate care, and always a lovliness of form.
She touched hundreds of people with her life, in the most positive, friendly and really delightful way. How much you could convey just by saying her name. (And I'd say it as she described it: Geh-ri. not Jairy!)
Peace... and tears.

Geri was a wonderful person. She made children love going to art class. She returned year after year to our Kindergarten to make snowmen in the winter, and every fall to plant bulbs. Each year when the sea of purple flowers bloom, we kindergarten teachers think of the years she put love into making the world a more beautiful place. She was our own"Miss Rumphius"!
