Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on Dec. 14, 1910, daughter of Benjamin and Tillie Berliner Weinstein, she was educated in New York City schools and colleges.
Mrs. Lewis was employed as a teacher in public and private schools in New York City, retiring in 1973.
Following her retirement, she moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., and to Tamarac, Fla., five years later. She moved to Devonshire Estates in 1998. She had previously spent summers in Lenox for many years.
Her husband, Murray Lewis, whom she married June 15, 1930, died in 2001.
She leaves two sons, Michael H. Lewis of Kerhonkson, N.Y., and Lenox, and Stephen G. Lewis of Goleta, Calif., six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Gertrude Lewis is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Mark, Craig, Karen, Rachel, Stephen and Tenaya, her five great-grandchildren, and two daughters-in-law, Pauline and Marti Lewis. There will be no public funeral or burial service. ROCHE FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. She was a caring and progressive teacher working with children with disabilities and was committed to social justice and peace. “Do not go gentle into that good night/Old age should burn and rave at close of day/Rage, rage against the dying of the light,” Dylan Thomas.
