Joan Mahoney Obituary

Joan Harriet Lahart Mahoney, 92, of Lenox, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on September 25, 1933, in Lenox, Joan was the daughter of the late William and Constance Lahart. A proud graduate of Lenox High School, she began her career at General Electric before meeting the love of her life, Francis "Moe" Mahoney - a Lenox Merchant player and a former Boston Celtic from Brooklyn, New York, who would forever capture her heart.

Joan and Moe were married on May 21, 1955, at St. Ann's Church in Lenox. The couple spent their first year of marriage in Brooklyn, where they welcomed their first child, Colleen. Before long, they returned to Joan's beloved hometown of Lenox to raise their growing family.

Together, Joan and Moe became part of local history when they posed as models for Norman Rockwell's iconic painting, "The Marriage License."

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Joan's greatest joy was her family. She was a woman of deep faith and quiet strength who dedicated her life to caring for others. She volunteered with Hospice and the Visiting Nurse Association, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and was a member of the Disciples of Jesus and Mary, the Irish American Organization, and St. Ann's Parish.

A lifelong supporter of local sports, Joan could always be found in the stands cheering for the St. Joe Crusaders or the Lenox Millionaires - and especially for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren through the years.

She cherished growing up in Lenox and held dear her memories of Tanglewood, Laurel Lake, and St. Ann's Church. She once played semi-pro basketball for the Merchanettes, a highlight of her younger years that reflected her competitive spirit and love of the game. Joan was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and would proudly recite the Gettysburg Address from memory - a testament to her patriotism and sharp mind, even into her final days.

Joan leaves her loving children Colleen MacDonald (Jack), Michael Mahoney (Rebecca), Terence Mahoney, and Kelly Joan Mahoney (Dave), as well as her son-in-law Nicholas Nicotra. She was the cherished grandmother of Kelly Bridget, Katie, Claire, Ann, Bridey, Nicholas, Kelly Rose, and Zack, and the adoring great-grandmother of Brenna, Jack, Maeve, and Owen.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband Francis H. "Moe" Mahoney; her daughter Kelly Anne Mahoney; her granddaughter Kaley Rose Nicotra; her brother William Lahart Jr.; and her sisters Constance Clifford and Margaret Casey.

As was her wish, a private funeral Mass for family will be celebrated. She requested no public calling hours or gathering after, desiring a simple and peaceful farewell surrounded by those closest to her.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be made to Boston Children's Hospital, the Alzheimer's Association, or Hospice Care in the Berkshires, in care of Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240.

Colleen, Mickey, T, and Kelly, I´m so sorry to hear about your mom...Joan was my first ever boss when I was a chambermaid at The Curtis Hotel back in the 70s! Also, my mom and dad, Bill and Teeny, were so fond of Joan and Moe and especially loved their time cheering on the Crusader hoop team when Peter and Mickey were the stars!

Peace and love to all

Please accept my most sincere condolences. Mrs. Mahoney was always a pleasure to visit with and talk about her days caring for my grandmother "Bet" O'Brien at the old Edgecomb Nursing Home. She was fun to be around and a proud Lenox resident. See will be greatly missed.
