Joseph Masiero Obituary

Joseph A. Masiero

1918-2012 Joseph A. Masiero, 94, native and former resident of West Stockbridge, died Saturday morning, Nov. 17, 2012 at St. Peters Hospital Hospice Care in Albany.

Joe was born in the family home September 18, 1918, the youngest of nine children of Rinaldo and Angela Zenere Masiero, and was predeceased by his sisters, Angie, Lena, Etha, Mary, and Agnes; and by brothers, Angelo, Bill, and John.

His early schooling was in W. Stockbridge, and Stockbridge, Mass. After Pearl Harbor he joined the Army Air Corps serving briefly in this country prior to being assigned to the Pacific Theater of Operations in New Guinea and Australia where he served with the 13th Bomb Squadron of the 5th Air Corps. After being honorably discharged as a First Sergeant on May 25, 1945, he was accepted at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania where he studied under the GI Bill, graduating in 1949.

Enjoying the company of others came naturally to Joe and certainly helped him during a successful career, first as a sales representative and later as Purchasing Agent for the City of Albany Public School District, retiring in 1990. Since then he enjoyed renewing friendships with his Air Corps friends, traveling throughout the country attending reunions.

History was one of the joys of his life. Joe enjoyed traveling to historic sites and reading as much as he could about historic events. However, his main interest was photography and he never went anywhere without a camera. His family and co-workers at the Albany School District especially enjoyed his photos of themselves and their families at work and social events. He was a charter member and past Commander of the American Legion Post in West Stockbridge. Joe was a generous, kind, and caring man, and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Kay) of Tampa, Florida, and Mark (Linda) of Sunrise, Florida. Also his nieces, Janet (Abbott) Lane of Dayton, Ohio, and Sara (Bill) Weaver of Williamsburg, Va., his nephews, George (Janet) O'Brien of Lenox. Mass., Edward O'Brien of Washington, D.C., John (Ada) Masiero of W. Stockbridge, Mass., and nieces, Mary Agnes ( Frank) McMahon of Livermore, Ca., and Jo-Ann (John) Ellis of Syracuse, N.Y. He is also survived by his good friend Charlotte Anderson of Delmar, N.Y. in addition to many other good friends and neighbors.

FUNERAL NOTICE: An hour of visitation will take place Friday, November 30th, from 9:30 to 10:30 at the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox. The funeral will be at 10:30 from the funeral home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Ann's Church in Lenox. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, West Stockbridge. Some of Joe's fondest memories were of the days he spent in his youth at the local library.

It was his hope that those who would wish to may make contributions in his memory to that place, the West Stockbridge Library, in care of the Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240.

Zio Joe--always a class act. Quick with a smile, quicker to pay the dinner tab before anyone ever saw the check. The world was made so much better for having had Joe Masiero, and all of us who were lucky enough to call him a friend or family is surely smiling through tears, remembering his legacy.

Joe Masiero: an impeccable gentleman and friend. Always smiling, he wore a rainbow in his heart. You could see, feel that inner glow, in his eyes and in his handshake. He let his light shine, and by example, as a mentor, inspired others to let their light shine, too, touching other people's lives for the better. I knew him in West Stockbridge where I first met Joe as an Eagle reporter and later as a Pittsfield Councilman-at-large. And many years later, our paths crossed again when in Albany, as a New York State Assemblyman, I found him in my office lobbying on an educational issue at the Capitol, shaking hands, smiling with a warm greeting, "Remember me?" I do, Joe, and won't forget. My condolences to his family.
