Judith Spencer Obituary

Judith Leahey Spencer 1940 - 2011 STOCKBRIDGE Friday, Nov. 11, was a typical day for Judy: a busy one reading The Eagle, doing Sudoku, taking a walk, calling her granddaughter at 11:11 am, watching Charlie Rose, pulling up plants, painting four shelves, picking the pictures for the family 2012 calendar, going to a granddaughter's soccer game in Chicopee. Not quite running the Dartmouth College Marathon in 1978 less than a year after heart surgery, but still busy. Less than four hours later, a stroke caused her death. Born Aug. 28, 1940, in Westfield to the late William and Marie Leahey, Judy grew up in Pittsfield on Victory Hill and graduated from Pittsfield High School, Class of 1958. In 1962, she graduated with a degree in education from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, formerly North Adams State College. Later, she received a Masters in Administration from Antioch College. Judy's work life was filled with jobs in the non-profit world. Judy taught from 1962-1965 at the former Stockbridge Plain School and Williams High School, where she met her husband, Jack Spencer, also a teacher. In 1972, Judy and her good friend Carolyn Sawyer opened the Sunshine Nursery School in Stockbridge. From 1980-1994, she was the Activities Director at Austen Riggs Clinic, and then worked for the Berkshire Garden Center, Lenox Library, and Landmark Volunteers. After that, Judy worked closely with the late Ed Jaffe as the first Executive Director of Berkshire South Regional Community Center. Very active on local boards, Judy served as trustee of Laurel Hill, Stockbridge Library, and Berkshire South, first president of The Stockbridge Land Trust, member of the Conservation Committee, and for 19 years, board president of The Coolidge Hill Foundation. Her crowning achievement was as head and principle motivating force in the creation of the Area of Critical Environmental Concern: Kampoosa Bog. Judy loved the land. Judy is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jack Spencer; two daughters, Kathy (Fred) Erickson of Richmond and Ann Marie (Scott) Miller of Pittsfield; Fred Wigge a student from Sweden who became part of the family; four perfect grandchildren, Eric, Kristen and Amanda Miller and Emily Erickson; two siblings, Patricia (Buzz) Hanley of Lee and Michael (Sally) Leahey of Portland, Maine; two sisters-in-law, Judy Burbank of Pittsfield and Cyndie Spencer (Denny Lund) of Madison, Wisc.; and many nieces and nephews, Chip and Mike Hanley, Tom Leahey, Kimberly Petricca, Spencer and Mark Burbank, Andrew, Paul and Julia Lund, and five grandnieces and nephews. MEMORIAL NOTICE: A Ceremony of Celebration will be held Saturday, November 19th at 1 pm at Stockbridge Town Offices, formerly the Stockbridge Plain School and Williams High School, 50 Main St, Stockbridge, MA. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 16th from 3 - 7 p.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Judy's name to Berkshire South Regional Community Center or The Stockbridge Library through FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230. I had Mrs. Spencer when she was Miss Lahey at Stockbridge Plain School when I was in I think 6th grade (I'm 58 now and mentally lazy, suffice to say a few years back). Our class had just behaved badly I think during a school assembly and she had a little talk with us afterwards. Such an elegant, mild-mannered and pleasant person, I always felt comfortable in her class, but seeing her mad really stopped us in our tracks. I think we didn't realize how powerful a person she was until we weren't going in the same direction she was going. Anyway this is just a thank-you to put out there for having had the privilege of learning the meaning of respect from such a impressive person.

Dear Jack, I am so sad you've lost Judy. Always, I've thought of the two of you as the most beautiful and least self-regarding couple I've ever met.The image of Judy is vivid - the way she walked with exquisite grace and athletic zeal down Main Street. To consider the countless good works she did for our Town, is to contemplate a noble life well lived. Forgive me if this is audacious, but in my mind's eye, I see her as a flashing sprite, a girl again forever with you, a lovely bird on the wing. I see her blue eyes and luminescent goodness and my heart goes out to you, dear Jack.

Dear Mr. Spencer,

I am so deeply sorry for you and your family. Mrs. Spencer, like you, was one of those rare people who are genuinely good, who have the ability to change lives and make the world a better place. I am certainly better for having known her. She was always so supportive of me and all of my endeavors. May all of her many random acts of kindness and senseless beauty be eternally remembered. I am sending you thoughts, prayers, and hugs.
Love,

Mr. Spencer & Family we were so very sorry to hear about Mrs. Spencer. What a very kind and beautiful lady. She and I had several opportunities to talk when I would drop off/pick up our youngest son at preschool, and she was dropping off/picking up Emily. She was the real deal. A truly loving and caring person. Thank you for sharing her with us. God blessed the world big time when He made Judy Spencer. May He give all of you peace and strength now and in the days to come.

To the Spencer family-I grew up on Victory Hill. Walked down the hill to Crane school. Walked across the field to North Junior high and then onto PHS. Spent many hours with Judy and other kids on Victory Hill. She will be missed but you can be assured she is looking down upon you all. She is another one of GOD"S angels. At night look up in the sky and pick out the brightest star. That will be Judy. She will always be at your side.

To Judy's family: My sympathy at the loss of one of the finest women I have ever met. We were in school together from Crane Elementary to PHS Class of 1958. It was always a pleasure to be in her company, and when I read her obituary this morning I was so very sad for all of you. It did make me happy to know that her last day was one that was filled with all of the ordinary, wonderful events that fill our hearts--family, busy and creative tasks, looking ahead to the future. She had so much more to give, and she will be, through all of you. Love never ends, and her love for all of you will sustain you through these hard days.

Dear Mr. Spencer,
I'm very sorry to hear of your wife's sudden passing. Stopping at your house on Halloween each year when I was a little girl for a Dunkin' Donut hole was the highlight of our Halloween night on Church Street. I recall my mom bent the "no wrapper, no eating" rule because "it was from a nice family's home". Your wife was a very kind woman who will be missed. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Dear Jack, Ann Marie, Kathy and all of your family,
The world without Judy Spencer in it is impossible for me to imagine. I have known her since I was 14 years old: first, as a wonderful and caring teacher, later as a great friend and, with Jack, frequent dinner partner. I will miss everything about her and still cannot believe that the last time I saw her was the last time I will ever see her. She lives on in all of you, and she is at peace.
