Matthew Mahoney Obituary

Matthew Mark Mahoney, 42, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 surrounded by his parents and his beloved sisters, who have been by his side since his cancer diagnosis. Matthew had battled an aggressive form of brain cancer for the last 8 months.

Born on May 8, 1982, he was the son of Edward and Laura (St. Marie) Mahoney. He was a graduate of Wahconah Regional High School. Matthew worked for the Berkshire Eagle for over 10 years and loved the freedom his work brought him. He faced many challenges and obstacles in his life, but he surpassed them all. Through what many could think of as difficult, he smiled and embraced. He found strength and fought every single day.

Matthew played Magic the Gathering and attended yearly meetups, which he always looked forward to. He also watched and read Anime and collected many figurines representing his favorite characters.

He was a well informed man and could talk current events with anyone. Where some shy away from discussions of politics, Matthew was the first in line to debate what he believed to be right.

Matthew loved riding his bike and many may remember seeing him riding around Berkshire County. He also loved food, especially Japanese cuisine, and was teaching himself to cook.

There were always animals in the house when Matthew was growing up. This led to a deep love for all animals, especially his favorite cat as a child, named Smokey. He and his family spent many hours fishing and hiking together and he always looked forward to the time together.

Matthew's gentle soul and unique nature will be missed immensely by all who knew him, especially his parents, Edward and Laura Mahoney of Becket, and his sisters, Lynn Andrews and her husband Kevin of Hinsdale and Megan Mahoney and her fiancé Gabe LaFleur of Shelburne Falls. He also leaves his nephews and nieces, Jacob Mandell, Tristyn Hunter-Andrews, Kara Steeber, Crista Andrews, Lily and Lincoln LaFleur, his maternal grandmother Dolores St. Marie of Pittsfield, aunts and uncles, Ruby and John Watson of Pittsfield, John and Michelle St. Marie of Pittsfield, Tina and Leo St. Marie of N.C., and Maria Leblanc and Anna Brick of South Hadley, MA and many cousins.

Matthew was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Henry St. Marie, his paternal grandparents, Ed and Lillian Mahoney, and his aunt Kathy Martin.

Matthew's family would like to express their deepest gratitude to his caregiver of over 10 years, Takayo Minami. They would also like to thank Hospice Care in the Berkshires, the BMC Phelps Cancer Center, and the nursing staff of the ICU, ER, and Cancer Floor who all helped keep Matthew comfortable.

SERVICES: A graveside service will be SATURDAY, August 10th beginning at 11am at the Pittsfield Cemetery. Drive through the main gate and keep to the right as you go over the bridge. The family will be gathered just beyond at the columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to "Hospice Care of the Berkshires" and mailed to the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home.

I knew Matt in his younger years as a teacher. My memories are of a happy and enthusiastic boy, always cooperative and doing his best. After my time with him, I would occasionally run into his Mom during my shopping travels. She would keep me up to date on Matt's doings, so that it felt that long after I knew him directly, I still knew him otherwise.
God's blessing and prayers for his family.
