Matthew J. Zepka
1920 - 2009 ADAMS Matthew John Zepka, 89, a longtime Adams businessman, died Friday evening, Dec. 4, 2009, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
Born in Adams on May 11, 1920, son of Jan and Aniela Ptak Zepka, he attended Adams schools, and graduated from the former Adams High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Zepka was a florist and nurseryman his whole life, and was the owner and operator of J. Zepka & Sons Florists and Nurseries, which was founded by his father in 1909, and continued to remain active in the business until just a few weeks before his passing.
He had been an active member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and an usher for many years. He was a member of Adams Post 160 American Legion; the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society; the Polish National Alliance; St. Michael's Society, and many florist and nurseryman's societies.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, the former Genevieve C. Wojieck, whom he married on Sept. 11, 1948; a son, Thomas Zepka, and his wife, Judy, of Cheshire; two daughters, Linda Zepka-Chalifoux, and her husband, David, of Adams, and Susan Zepkaof Cheshire; a brother, Albert Zepka of Wethersfield, Conn.; two grandchildren, Becky Zepka and Jonathan Zepka, both of Cheshire; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and John Zepka, and by two sisters, Helena Ryczek and Mary Battory.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Thursday, Dec. 10, at 9 a.m. from the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St. Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of Pope John Paul the Great, Adams, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Stanislaus School or to Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield, through the funeral home.
