Robert Blafield Obituary

RICHMOND - Robert Blafield of Richmond died June 17, 2017, at Berkshire Medical Center after bravely facing a lengthy illness.

He was born in Staten Island, NY and felt an immediate connection with the Berkshires after a family trip to Western Massachusetts. He and his wife Audrey, a landscape painter, fell in love with the area and decided to live here year round and raise a family. Bob was weaned in New York City on Italian Opera and at the age of fifteen, he was privileged to sing under Arturo Toscanini. He knew then that music would be his life and career. Robert moved to the Berkshires in 1960 from New York City where he coached voice and opera to become the music director at the Berkshire Playhouse in Stockbridge. He was a talented composer, organist, pianist, choral director and conductor. He was the Founding Music Director of Berkshire Lyric Theatre in 1963, and later established their Blafield Children's Chorus, named in his honor. His stated aim was "to foster the vocal arts" in our Berkshires, which he did with passion and love over the next forty-four years, retiring as the Artistic Director of BLT in 2007. During that span he was responsible for a series of highly successful productions of musicals, opera, major oratorios as well as concerts and recitals of all description. A very partial list includes "The Pirates of Penzance," " The Mikado," "Brigadoon," "Carousel," "Dido and Aeneas," "Amahl and the Night Visitors," "Gianni Schicchi," "Noye's Flood," Bach's "Mass in B Minor," Mozart's "Requiem," Bloch's "Sacred Service," and Handel's "Israel in Egypt." Bob was on the faculty of numerous local schools and was the organist and choirmaster at a number of Berkshire churches and synagogues, including many years at St. Marks in Pittsfield, Temple Anshe Amunim in Pittsfield and most recently at South Congregational in Pittsfield. After he retired at the age of 88, he continued to pursue his passion for music. He continued to practice piano, compose, and teach piano and voice at home until the very end of his life. In the course of more than six decades of teaching, he was able to nurture the vocal talents of countless singers of all ages, including several that have gone on to professional lives in music.

Robert touched so many lives and will continue to live on in our hearts. He showed a deep and unconditional love for his daughters, grandchildren, family and friends. He was there good times and bad for the people he loved and cared for. He gave us so many gifts: His wonderful sense of humor; a curious and active mind; a love of learning through books, art, conversation and travel; a deep commitment to home, family and friends; ability to have sheer fun; a connection to nature and animals; strength of character; and wisdom about how to live a meaningful and quality life.

He leaves his loving daughters Alma Blafield and Kari Dupuis; son-in-law Jeff Dupuis; his beloved grandchildren Laura and Emily; sister Doris Nelsen; and his dear dog Toto.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: There will be a celebration of Robert's life at South Congregational Church in Pittsfield, MA on Saturday, June 24th at 11:00 AM. A reception will be held in the church parlor after the service. There will be music, readings and the service will be led by the Reverend Joel Huntington.

In lieu of sending flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Blafield Children's Chorus in care of the Berkshire Lyric Theatre, Inc., BLT, Box 347, Pittsfield, MA 01201; or to the South Congregational Church Community Food Pantry, 110 South Street in Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Dear Bob really loved those children.

April 5, 2018

I am a former student of Robert Blafield. This devestates me. I was hoping I would get to visit him with my children in the near future. I am awestruck to hear of his passing. I was sure the jolly fellow would live darn near 100 years! But I believe he is with the Lord now, praise God! I am praying in time we will meet again and he will see my children. He never saw any of my musical achievements after teaching me. I feel I failed him.. I will strive all the more to survive his legacy through my music, and "make it big". Hopefully he will down at me and be pleased with my accomplishments, which he helped.

So sorry to hear about Bob's passing away. We met at a gathering for Blåfield relatives in Finland many years ago, and immediately felt a close connection. We stayed in touch through the years, but did not meet again. I will remember him in fond memory.

Living in New York State I did not learn of Bob's death until this morning, June 25, 2017. I wish I could have been at the memorial service on Saturday to represent both myself and my mother, Joan White, who hired him as music director for the Berkshire Playhouse in 1960, bringing him and Audrey to the Berkshires for us all to share. I worked with Bob in My Fair Lady at the Playhouse and years later in the Berkshire Lyric production of Carousel with Maureen O'Flynn and many others. I sang with Berkshire Lyric too, for a while, and Bob had always been a big part of my life until I moved away. He will be missed by so many, and I will always rue the day that I never went back to visit him in Richmond.

So sorry to hear this. I have many fond memories singing in the children's choir and playing handbells at St. Mark's Church and Mr. Blafield was a big part of that experience. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Bob was my high school music teacher at Windsor Mountain School from 1969-1972 and then gave me voice lessons in the new millennium. His love of literature, music, story telling and devilish humor made every encounter a rich adventure! A true Renaissance man and an inspirational teacher. You will be missed, Maestro!

Dear Alma and Kari,

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your father. You are both bright, kind, gentle women that any parent would be blessed to have as daughters. It's clear that you were also blessed with a wonderfully talented and kind father.
Sincere condolences on this very sad loss both for your family and the community.

He loved Audrey and daughters , and BLT came second. He allowed me to grow in in a backstage capacity, I would not be the stage manager and music lover I am today without his guidance. I will never, ever forget his humor !!

As well as his musical gifts, Bob was a great story teller and loved sharing memories. One special thing about him to me was his candor and authenticity. He had a way of making you feel special, no matter who you were. Status seemed unimportant to him.

To the Robert Blafield family,
Sending you my condolences from South Carolina. I was the town secretary for the Town of Richmond (next to Mr. Blafield's home) for 10 years (retiring in 2009). I had many encounters with Mr. Blafield at the town hall such a sweet, gracious man to have known. I especially remember the time Mr. Blafield made a special trip to the town hall at my retirement party to give me a hug ,and wish me the happiest and healthiest retirement. A hug I shall never forget. Rest in peace dear Mr. Blafield.

Singing under Bob's direction gave me great pleasure. He brought more than passion to his music. He also brought his broad breadth of curiosity and knowledge of art.

Bob also had an equally passionate desire for justice and peace. He cared deeply for people fiercely believing that everyone deserves love and care.

We're all better for knowing Bob.
