NORTH ADAMS -- Roger Melvin Atwell, 62, of 89 Barbour St. died Saturday in the emergency room of North Adams Regional Hospital after being stricken earlier in the day.
Born in North Adams on July 16, 1943, son of the late Melvin H. and Janet Burr Atwell DeGrenier, he attended schools in Clarksburg.
Mr. Atwell retired from Steinerfilm Co. in Williamstown, where he had worked for 20 years. Before that, he was employed by the former R.J. Widen Tannery.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 310, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 704, Greylock Community Club and the Sons of the American Legion.
His wife, the former Betty Wentz, is deceased.
He leaves a sister, Patricia Courtemanche of North Adams, and two brothers, David Atwell of Williamstown and Michael DeGrenier of North Adams. A daughter, Katherine Atwell Kelesa, died in February 2004.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Roger Melvin Atwell will be tomorrow, Dec. 20, 2005, at 9:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, CENTRAL CHAPEL, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by services at 10 at First Baptist Church of North Adams conducted by the Rev. Joseph DeCosta, pastor. Burial will be in the spring in Clarksburg Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be today from 4 to 7. Donations may be made to the Eagles Building Fund or to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire, both in care of the funeral home. Survivors also include a brother-in-law, Bernard Courtemanche, and nieces and nephews. His daughter, Katherine Atwell Kelesa, died in February 2004.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

To Roger's family,
Roger and my mom and dad (Bob & Lee Roach) were friends for many years. Roger came to visit my dad 3 years ago just before he passed away. They, along with Betty, had many good times together.

Ilost my brother Emery Skip Shephard two weeks ago,Roger and Skip were friends for many years,Roger was at the hospital eveyday with Skip.His support ment so much to us. I was so sad to here of his passing,my heart goes out to his family and friends.He was a good man and friend.
