John C. Eminger

John C. Eminger 91, passed away on November 15, 2023. The Eminger family, Ernest, Francis, John and Jimmy, moved to Big Bear in 1943. John was recognized as an outstanding student and athlete. John left school early to serve with his friends in the local National Guard Company. After attending Armored School (tanks), his National Guard Unit was activated and sent to Korea, as the 40th Armored Division and John was promoted to Sergeant and Tank Commander. John was awarded the Bronze Star for Exceptional Bravery during battle. John left the Army after his service in Korea and became part of the family business, Eminger and Sons Bear Valley Market. Among several of John's accomplishments, he was the first white man to kill a deer with a bow and arrow in the San Bernardino Mountains. John entered politics and became Big Bear's first mayor in 1980. John was also active in the local chapter of the Rotary Club and served as President several times. John also served as President on the Municipal Water District and volunteered for the Doves, Meals on Wheels and the Discovery Center. When the grocery store closed, John opened a garden nursery. No one knew that John was born with a "Green Thumb".

John was preceded in death by his first wife Georgianna and Grandsons Jedediah and Jacob. John is survived by his wife Jackie, Brother Jim (Joan), children, Kim Henrich (Pedro), Mark (Jeannie) and Sharon Beattie (Ken). Grandchildren, Justin and John Ryan, Lindsay and Ariel and great grandchildren Wes and Sorral.
