Oct. 4, 1938 - Nov. 24, 2018
LaSALLE -- John E. Schuberg, 80, of LaSalle, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 24, at Magnumcare of Adrian.
Born on Oct, 4, 1938, in Big Rapids, John was the youngest son of the late Carl A. and Alice M. (Stephenson) Schuberg. From a young age, growing up on the family farm alongside his brothers, he learned a strong work ethic that later on served him well during his career as a harness horse trainer. He married his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Bonnie Lynne Franck, on June 21, 1958, in Big Rapids.
After graduating high school, he went on to Ferris State University, obtaining his bachelor degree in education and a master in business from Central Michigan University. John began his teaching career in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, moving back to Monroe in 1963 and taking a position at Monroe High School, teaching business classes.
After 15 years of teaching, John pursued his passion of harness horse racing, becoming a full-time horse trainer. For the rest of his life, John owned and operated John E. Schuberg Stables, training horses to race at county fairs in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. John was highly regarded and admired in the industry for being an expert at buying young stock and producing successful racehorses.
John will always be remembered for his kind heart, generosity and sense of humor, as he was liked by all who knew him.
To cherish his memory, John is survived by two sons, Ted (Tieme) Schuberg, of Hesperia, and Troy (Angela) Schuberg, of Seacrest, Florida; and a daughter, Holly Smith, of Perrysburg, Ohio. John will also be greatly missed by four grandchildren, Eric Schuberg, Wade Schuberg, Cameron Smith and Chloe Smith.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, and brothers, Carly Schuberg and Shirley "Shi" Schuberg.
Memorial contributions in John's memory are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to Rupp Funeral Home, Inc. Online condolences to the family may be sent through ruppfuneralhomeinc.com.

What an honor to have known John in racing these past years--truly a gentleman in every sense. We're relieved that he is finally at peace and offer sincere sympathy to the family, including Greg Bateson, his "sidekick".
Prayers and condolences~

John trained horses for me when I first got in the racing business. I found him to be very honest and hard working. He always put my interests first. He did not always tell you what you wanted to hear, but he always told you what you needed to hear. He was a very upstanding person and I was honored to know him. Rest in peace John!

I'm so very sorry to hear of Mr. Schuberg's passing. I have fond memories of working with him at Monroe High School. I am sure it was he who recommended me for a position with his family's insurance business in Big Rapids, MI when I worked at Ferris State College in the late 60s. He was a fine man.
