Arthur J. Lammers passed away peacefully with family at his side on March 18, two days after his 101st birthday.
He was born March 15, 1911, in Marion, S.D., to Altman and Esther Lammers and came to Montana at the age of 2 months with his parents and older brother Oliver to live on their homestead, east of Nihill, Mont. Art graduated from high school in Hedgesville, Mont., in 1929 and then soon went to work at the Montana State Experiment Station in Moccasin, Mont. He was honored to be the only former employee to attend the 25th, 50th, 75th, and 100th anniversary of the Station.
He married Rose Bettinger in Ryegate on Feb. 24, 1941. They settled on their ranch east of Hedgesville and raised five children, Arville (Elaine), Leon (Margaret), Sharon (Jerry), Shirley, and Larry (Robin). Art enjoyed hunting, playing cards and reminiscing about the old days. Each Christmas his children's families enjoyed a bushel of Texas citrus, a treat he carried forward from the old days. Art was a 4-H leader, a charter member of the Wheatland Co. Farm Bureau, Wheatland Co. Stockgrowers, and a member of Montana Woolgrowers for over 60 years. He was also on the Wheatland Co. Weed Board for 26 years, the longest of any member in Montana. Art loved his ranch, sheep, family and friends.
Art is preceded in death by Rose, his wife of 71 years, his parents, and siblings Oliver, Donald, Robert, Ted, Henrietta and Jean.
He is survived by his five children, 10 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
His family is forever indebted to the staff at Wheatland Memorial Healthcare for their loving, professional care of Art and Rose over the last few years.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Perkins Funeral Home in Harlowton. Burial will follow at Harlowton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Wheatland Memorial Healthcare or the Montana Woolgrowers Association.
