Dean Betzer Obituary
Dean Sterling Betzer left this world with family by his side at the age of 82.
Dean was born on Jan. 3, 1935 to Dr. C.H. and Mable Betzer in Libertyville, IL. In 1948, his family moved to Billings, MT, where Dean graduated from Senior High School in 1953. Dean served in the United States Navy Reserve for eight years and the United States Air Force for six years. During his time in the Air Force, Dean married Antoinette Kessel. Together, they had two children while living in Great Falls and two more upon returning to Billings.
Dean joined the Billings Police Department in 1964, working in the motorcycle patrol unit until 1968. In 1970, he became a Yellowstone County Sheriff's Deputy and then, a Deputy U.S. Marshal in 1971. Dean was appointed Yellowstone County Sheriff in 1972, serving two terms before leaving law enforcement. Following his exit from law enforcement Dean had a successful career in the trucking industry. He was self-employed for six years, eventually going to work for Steve Nelson Trucking, before retiring in 2005.
Dean enjoyed riding motorcycles, meeting friends for coffee, fishing, camping and boating with his family. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. C.H. and Mable Betzer, and one son, Kurt Allen Betzer. Dean is survived by his wife, Antoinette, of Billings, his brother, Robert Betzer, of San Diego, CA, three children, Dean Betzer, Jr. (Cindy) of Tampa, FL, Julie (Delno) Pierce of Missoula, MT, and Darin Betzer of Billings, MT. Dean was adored by his six granddaughters, Kari Boiter, Cassie Thompson, Karissa Betzer, Chelsea Pierce, Whitney Pierce and Kalanie Gallagher. He also enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren, Ian, Gracie and Avaree.
A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at the Cremation & Funeral Gallery in Billings at 11:30 a.m., on January 20, followed by inurnment in the Yellowstone National Veterans Cemetery at 1:00 pm. The family asks in lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or RiverStone Health's hospice care program.
Arrangements are by Cremation & Funeral Gallery. Condolences can be sent through www.cfgbillings.com through "Our Families."
